Joe Hill (activist)
Joe Hill (October 7, 1879 – November 19, 1915), born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund and also known as Joseph Hillström, was a Swedish-American labor activist, songwriter, and member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW, familiarly called the "Wobblies"). A native Swedish speaker, he learned English during the early 1900s, while working various jobs from New York to San Francisco. Hill, an immigrant worker frequently facing unemployment and underemployment, became a popular songwriter and cartoonist for the union. His songs include "The Preacher and the Slave" (in which he coined the phrase "wiktionary:pie in the sky, pie in the sky"), "The Tramp (song), The Tramp", "There Is Power in a Union", "The Rebel Girl", and "Casey Jones—the Union Scab", which express the harsh and combative life of itinerant workers, and call for workers to organize their efforts to improve working conditions. Joe Hills
Joseph John Hills (14 October 1897 – 21 September 1969) was an English first-class cricketer, Test match umpire and professional footballer. Life and career Born in London in 1897, Hills served in World War I with the Royal Engineers and was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery as a cabler and telegraphist during the Battle of Amiens. Hills played professional football as a goalkeeper, moving to Wales when he was signed by Cardiff City in 1924. He also played for Swansea Town and Fulham before a serious injury to his right arm in 1927 ended his career. Hills played 107 cricket matches for Glamorgan and Wales between 1926 and 1931.
