Joseph Edward Laferrière
Joseph Edward Laferrière (born 1955) is an American botanist with a particular interest in ethnobotany. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Arizona in 1991 with a dissertation titled "Optimal use of ethnobotanical resources by the Mountain Pima of Chihuahua, Mexico". Among other institutions, he has held professional positions at Washington State University, Biosphere 2, and the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos (in Cuernavaca, Mexico). He is the author or co-author of the botanical names of some 120 taxa, including '' Berberis pimana, Hymenocallis clivorum, Hymenocallis pimana, Laennecia pimana, Pectis pimana, Prionosciadium saraviki'', and ''Yucca declinata ''Yucca declinata'' is a species of the genus ''Yucca'', family Asparagaceae. Cuernavaca (; nci-IPA, Cuauhnāhuac, kʷawˈnaːwak "near the woods", ) is the capital and largest city of the state of Morelos in Mexico. ''Hymenocallis clivorum'' is a member of the genus ''Hymenocallis'', of the plant family Amaryllidaceae. It is native to the southern part of the Mexican state of Sonora. Description ''Hymenocallis clivorum'' is a perennial herb producing bulbs about 6 cm long that resemble small onions. The leaves are narrow and sword-shaped, up to 35 cm long, very waxy on the surface. The flowering stalk is up to 45 cm tall, bearing an umbel of 8-11 flowers. The flowers are white with a white staminal cup (= membrane connecting the filaments) 18–21 mm high. Taxonomy The species was first described in 1998 by Joseph E. Laferrière. The epithet "''clivorum''" means "of the slopes." ''Hymenocallis pimana'' is a member of the genus ''Hymenocallis'', in the family Amaryllidaceae. Common name in English is Pima spider-lily; in Spanish it is cebollín. It is endemic to a small mountainous region in the Sierra Madre Occidental, straddling the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora. Many of the people of the region are of the indigenous group known as the Mountain Pima or Pima Bajo. Type locale is the small village of Nabogame, approximately 18 km northwest of Yepáchic, Chihuahua and about 10 km east of the frontier with Sonora.
