Josef Illík
Josef Illík (10 September 1919 – 21 January 2006) was a Czech cinematographer and photographer. Life Josef Illík studied photography in high school. His teachers were Ladislav Sutnar, Jaromír Funke and Josef Ehm. After the World War II he was a successful photographer, but also started working at Barrandov Studios as an assistant cinematographer. From 1952 to 1957 he was a cinematographer for army documentaries in Czechoslovak Army Film. Since 1958 he worked on feature films as a cinematographer. He frequently worked with directors Karel Kachyňa, Václav Krška and Václav Vorlíček. ''Three Wishes for Cinderella'' (; , also called in English ''Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella'' or ''Three Gifts for Cinderella'') is a 1973 Czechoslovak-East German film based on the fairy-tale ''Cinderella''. It was directed by Václav Vorlíček in a co-production between DEFA-Studio für Spielfilme and Barrandov Studios. The story was based on the fairy tale ''O Popelce'' written by Božena Němcová (a Bohemian variation of the classic Cinderella fairytale). ''The Ear'' () is a Czech language film by Karel Kachyňa, completed in 1970. This film was banned by the nation's ruling Communist party (who were supported by the occupying Soviet forces). It wasn't released until the fall of the communist regime in 1989. Plot The film is about a bitter married couple that consists of Ludvík, a senior official of Prague's ruling Communist regime, and his alcoholic wife Anna. They return home after attending a political party dinner and notice their home has been broken into. Several strange occurrences, including the disappearance of their spare house keys and dead phone lines, lead them to believe that they are under surveillance by their own government. ''Witchhammer'' () is a 1970 Czechoslovak drama film directed by Otakar Vávra and starring Elo Romančík. Based on the novel '' Kladivo na čarodějnice'' by Václav Kaplický, ''Witchhammer'' relates the story of the Northern Moravia witch trials of the 1670s, focusing on the priest Kryštof Lautner, played by Romančík, who falls victim to the witchhunt after opposing the trials. The film contains possible allegory about Communist show trials in Czechoslovakia. The film had a limited release in Czechoslovakia. Despite this, it won awards at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival in 1970 and is considered one of Vávra's finest films. ''Coach to Vienna'' (; in USA released as ''Carriage to Vienna'') is a 1966 Czechoslovak war drama directed by Karel Kachyňa. The film was awarded the third prize at Karlovy Vary Film Festival in 1966, however it was also denounced as "disgraceful ideological mischief", anti-Czech, anti-German and anti-partisan by some critics. The film was banned from distribution after Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.
