John Summers (footballer)
John Lawrence Summers (8 February 1915 – 12 April 1991) was an English professional footballer who played as an outside-forward for various clubs in the 1930s, including Leicester City, Derby County and Southampton in the Football League before becoming a police officer in Southampton. Football career Summers was born in the Chorlton area of Manchester and represented both Manchester Schools and Lancashire Schools at football. His football career started in the Cheshire County League before joining Burnley as a trainee aged 17 in February 1932. During his brief time at Turf Moor, Summers joined Fleetwood of the Lancashire Combination on loan. He was offered a trial at Manchester United but the Burnley management refused him permission, following which he joined Preston North End. John Summers & Sons Ltd was a major United Kingdom iron and steel producer, latterly based on the Dee Estuary at Shotton, Flintshire. The company was absorbed into British Steel Corporation in 1967; British Steel became Corus in 1999 and this company was taken over by Tata Steel in 2007. Early life The founder, John Summers, was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1822. While working as a clogger, he visited the Great Exhibition in 1851, where he bought a nail making machine, and commenced making nails with which to fasten the iron strips on to the soles of clogs. In 1852, Summers moved into Sandy Bank Iron Forge at Stalybridge, where he successfully concentrated on the production of clog irons and nails. He then purchased land near the forge, and built a new ironworks, known as the Globe Works. The Business John Summers died on 10 April 1876, at the age of 54. Group Captain John Kenneth Summers (born 22 December 1894, date of death unknown) was a British First World War flying ace credited with eight aerial victories. Early life and background Summers was born on Shamian Island, the British Concession in Canton, China, where his father, J. A. Summers, was an employee of the Imperial Maritime Customs Service. Later he attended the University of Birmingham. World War I Summers was commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant on 25 January 1915, and served in the 13th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, until transferred to the General List on 30 April to serve in the Royal Flying Corps. As an observer he served in No. 3 Squadron RFC, and later trained as a pilot. Summers was awarded Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate No. 2154 on 13 December 1915, after soloing a Maurice Farman biplane at the Military School at Birmingham.
