John Savile, 1st Baron Savile Of Pontefract
John Savile, 1st Baron Savile of Pontefract (1556 – 31 August 1630) was an English politician. He was M.P. for Lincoln (1586), Sheriff of Lincolnshire (1590), knight of the shire for Yorkshire (1597, 1614, 1624 and 1626), ''custos rotulorum'' of West Riding of Yorkshire (ejected from office in 1615 but reappointed in 1626), privy councillor and comptroller of household (1627–1630). He was created Baron Savile in 1627. Early life John Savile was born in 1556, the son of Sir Robert Savile of Barkston, Lincolnshire (d. 1585), by his wife Anne Hussey (d. 1562), sister of John Hussey, 1st Baron Hussey of Sleaford, and widow of Sir Richard Thimelby. Knight of the shire () was the formal title for a member of parliament (MP) representing a county constituency in the British House of Commons, from its origins in the medieval Parliament of England until the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 ended the practice of each county (or ''shire'') forming a single constituency. The corresponding titles for other MPs were '' burgess'' in a borough constituency (or ''citizen'' if the borough had city status) and ''baron'' for a Cinque Ports constituency. Knights of the shire had more prestige than burgesses, and sitting burgesses often stood for election for the shire in the hope of increasing their standing in Parliament. The name "knight of the shire" originally implied that the representative had to be a knight, and the writ of election referred to a belted knight until the 19th century; but by the 14th century men who were not knights were commonly elected. Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland, KB, PC (c. 1575 – September 1633) was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1601 to 1622. He was created Viscount Falkland in the Scottish peerage in 1620. He was Lord Deputy of Ireland from 1622 until 1629. Francis Clifford, 4th Earl Of Cumberland
Francis Clifford, 4th Earl of Cumberland (15594 January 1641) was a member of the Clifford family which held the seat of Skipton from 1310 to 1676. He was the second son of Henry Clifford, 2nd Earl of Cumberland and Anne Dacre and inherited his title and estates on the death of his brother George, who had willed them to him in place of his daughter Anne. A long lawsuit between them over the possession of the family estates was settled in 1617. He was elected Member of Parliament for Westmorland in 1584 and 1586 and for Yorkshire in 1604. Edward Stanhope PC (24 September 1840 – 21 December 1893) was a British Conservative Party politician who was Secretary of State for War from 1887 to 1892. Background and education Born in Belgravia in London in 1840, Stanhope was the second son of Philip Stanhope, 5th Earl Stanhope, by his wife Emily Harriet, daughter of General Sir Edward Kerrison, 1st Baronet. Arthur Stanhope, 6th Earl Stanhope, was his elder brother and Philip Stanhope, 1st Baron Weardale, his younger brother. Sir George Savile, 1st Baronet of Thornhill (1551 – 12 November 1622), was an English politician and the lineal ancestor of the Marquesses of Halifax. He was born in 1551, the eldest son of Henry Savile and Joan Vernon. The Saviles were an old gentry family of Yorkshire, where many of them served as MPs or sheriffs. George Savile himself was elected to serve as Member of Parliament for Boroughbridge in 1586 and for Yorkshire in 1593. Thomas Fairfax, 1st Lord Fairfax of Cameron (c. 1560 – 1 May 1640) was an English army officer, diplomat and politician.
