John Howell (athlete)
John David Howell (born 10 April 1936) is a former British long jumper. Biography Howell was born in London, England and was a member of the Herne Hill Harriers. He first competed internationally at the Athletics at the 1960 Summer Olympics, 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Representing Great Britain, he finished in 27th place in the qualifying round of the Athletics at the 1960 Summer Olympics – Men's long jump, long jump event with a jump of 7.19 metres. Howell finished second behind John Oladitan in the long jump event at the 1961 AAA Championships and second behind Jorma Valkama at the 1962 AAA Championships but by virtue of being the highest placed British athlete he was considered the List of British champions in long jump, British long jump champion. John Adams Howell
John Adams Howell (March 16, 1840 – January 10, 1918) was a rear admiral of the United States Navy who served during the American Civil War and the Spanish–American War. He was also a noted inventor. Biography Howell was born in Bath, New York, on March 16, 1840, to William and Adelphia Frances Howell. He had four brothers; Edward Augustus Howell, William Howell, Jr., and twins Robert and William Adams, who died before their first birthday. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1858, and was promoted to lieutenant in April 1861. He married Arabelle E. Krause on May 11, 1867, and they had three children: William, Arabella, and Frances. The American Civil War broke out in April 1861. During the war, Howell served as executive officer of the steam sloop at the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864, and was honorably mentioned in despatches by his commanding officer . John Howell & Son, known as John Howell, was the leading building and engineering company in Hastings, Sussex in the 1860s. Its founder, John Howell Senior (ca.1825−1893) engineered churches and other public buildings in the area to the designs of innovative architects, including Holy Trinity Church, Hastings, Holy Trinity Church in 1860 to the design of Samuel Sanders Teulon, and St Johns Church, Hollington, Hastings, Hollington in 1865−1868 for Edward Alexander Wyon. John White Howell (December 22, 1857 – July 28, 1937) was an American electrical engineer who spent his entire professional career (1880 to 1930) working for Thomas Edison, specializing in the development and manufacturing of the incandescent lamp. In 1924 Howell was a recipient of the IEEE Edison Medal for his contributions towards the development of the incandescent lamp. John Morgan Howell
John Morgan Howell (1855-1928) was a prominent figure in the public life of Cardiganshire in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A supporter of the Liberal Party, he represented Aberaeron as a county councillor for over thirty years and served on many other public bodies. Shortly after he was elected as county councillor in 1889, Howell married Ann Evans at the Tabernacle Calvinistic Methodist Church, Aberaeron. Howell was a prominent figure at Tabernacle, became its precentor in 1874, and was also superintendent of the Sunday school from a young age. It was said that he was the mainstay of the musical festivals or Cymanfaoedd held in the district. John McDade Howell (January 28, 1922 – January 3, 2016) was the seventh chancellor of East Carolina University. He was born in Five Points, Alabama. In 1942, he joined the US Army Air Corps and served for three years in the European Theater, which he received a Bronze Star. After he was honorably discharged he enrolled at the University of Alabama, earning a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1948 and a master's degree in political science the following year. John Howell (1809 – 25 May 1874) was a New Zealand whaler, trader, pastoralist and politician. Howell was born in 1809.Birth year as per the biography on the information board in Howell's Memorial Park, Riverton He settled in New Zealand, and established the settlement that is today known as Riverton, New Zealand, Riverton. He was a member of the Southland Provincial Council from 1862 to 1864 for the Riverton electorate, and from 1864 to 1867 for the Aparima electorate. Howell's Cottage, which was built for him at Riverton in 1837/38, is the oldest building in Riverton. It is one of very few surviving New Zealand buildings that predates the 1840s, and is listed as a Category I building by Heritage New Zealand. References
