John F. Murphy, Sr.
John Francis 'Murph' Murphy Sr. (February 22, 1923 – November 19, 2011) was an American politician. Born in Ludlow, Vermont, he went to Black River Academy and then to Windsor Trade School. Murphy then worked as a machinist for General Electric for twenty-eight years. He was a member of the Vermont House of Representatives between 1969 and 1998 and was a Democrat. He then served as water commissioner in Ludlow. He died in Ludlow, Vermont. Murphy's funeral was held on November 23, 2011, and he was eulogized by Ralph G. Wright Ralph G. Ludlow (town), Vermont
Ludlow is a town in Windsor County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,172 at the 2020 census. Ludlow is the home of Okemo Mountain, a popular ski resort. Before becoming a ski destination, Ludlow was originally a mill town, and was the home of a General Electric plant until 1977. It was named after Ludlow, Massachusetts which is less than 100 miles away. There is also a village of Ludlow in the town. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.46%, is water. Within the town are located the incorporated village of Ludlow and the small hamlets of Grahamville and Smithville. Black River Academy
The Black River Academy is a historic school building on High Street in the village of Ludlow, Vermont. Chartered in 1835, the school served as the town high school until 1938. The present building, a Richardsonian Romanesque structure built in 1888, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 for its architectural and historic educational significance. It presently houses the Black River Academy Museum, operated by the Black River Historical Society. Description The Black River Academy building stands on the south side of High Street, a short way west of the Ludlow village green. It is a three-story masonry structure, built out of load-bearing brick set on a granite foundation. It has a gabled roof with projection hip-roofed sections, and a four-story tower at one corner, topped by a truncated pyramidal roof.
