John Blennerhassett (1930–2013)
John Blennerhassett (1930 – 22 September 2013) was an Irish Fine Gael politician from County Kerry. A farm owner and former drapery buyer, he stood unsuccessfully as a Fine Gael candidate for Dáil Éireann in the Kerry North constituency at the 1969, 1973, and 1977 general elections. Blennerhassett did not stand for the Dáil again, but after his 1973 defeat he was nominated by the Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave to the 13th Seanad. He was re-elected in 1977 to the 14th Seanad and in 1981 to the 15th Seanad, but the party did not nominate him for the 1982 Seanad election. He blamed the Fine Gael leader Garret FitzGerald, and resigned from the party. He was also a member of Kerry County Council from 1974 to 1991 and of Tralee Urban District Council from 1967 to 1994 and of Tralee Town Council from 1999 to 2004. Seanad Éireann ( ; ; "Senate of Ireland") is the senate of the Oireachtas (the Irish legislature), which also comprises the President of Ireland and Dáil Éireann (defined as the house of representatives). Blennerhassett Family
The Blennerhassett family is an English and Anglo-Irish noble family which has been involved in the politics of the Britain and Ireland since the fourteenth century. The male line of the family is extinct in Britain. History The family is recorded as having originally been settled in Cumberland in northern England, at the manor of Blennerhasset. The landowner John de Blennerhassett sat in the House of Commons of England as the Member of Parliament for Carlisle in 1381 and 1384, and his descendants represented the seat in almost every Parliament from the reign of Richard II to the reign of James I. ''The Kerryman'' is a weekly local newspaper published in County Kerry in Ireland by Independent News & Media who are a subsidiary of Mediahuis. The newspaper was founded in 1904 by Maurice Griffin and cousins Thomas and Daniel Nolan. Independent News & Media, then known as Independent Newspapers Limited acquired ''The Kerryman'' in 1972.
