Jock (stereotype)
In the United States and Canada, a jock is a stereotype of an athlete, or someone who is consumed by sports and sports culture, and does not take much interest in intellectual pursuits or other activities. It is generally applied mostly to high school and college athletics participants who form a distinct youth subculture. As a blanket term, ''jock'' can be considered synonymous with ''athlete''. Jocks are usually presented as male practitioners of team sports such as American football, basketball, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and ice hockey. Origin The use of the term "jock" to refer to an athletic man is thought to have emerged around 1963. It is believed to be derived from the word " jockstrap", which is an undergarment worn to support/protect the male genitals while playing sports. The 9th (Scottish) Division, was an infantry division of the British Army during the First World War, one of the Kitchener's Army divisions raised from volunteers by Lord Kitchener to serve on the Western Front during the First World War. After the 1st South African Infantry Brigade Group joined in early 1916, the division was known colloquially as the '' Jock and Springboks''. ''Jocks'' is a 1987 teen film, teen comedy film, comedy. The film was directed by Steve Carver and written by Michael Lanahan and David Oas. ''Jocks'' was shot in Las Vegas and in Los Angeles. Plot Coach Williams (Richard Roundtree) must get his tennis players into shape for the big play-offs in Las Vegas.
