Joan De Sagarra
Joan de Sagarra i Devesa (8 January 1939 – 9 May 2025) was a Spanish journalist and writer, son of the poet Josep Maria de Sagarra. Life and career Sagarra studied at the Institut d'études théâtrales of the Sorbonne, and when back in Barcelona he worked as a journalist for ''Tele/eXpres'', ''El País'' and ''El Temps'', among other publications. He still wrote columns for ''La Vanguardia'' newspaper. He is thought to be the father of the concept of the '' gauche divine'' ('divine left'), a movement of leftist intellectuals and artists that spread through Barcelona in the 1960s and early 1970s. The majority of its members came from the well-to-do classes of the Catalan capital. Sagarra died on 9 May 2025, at the age of 86. Josep Maria De Sagarra
Josep Maria de Sagarra i de Castellarnau (Barcelona, 5 March 1894 – 27 September 1961) was a Catalan-language writer from Barcelona, Catalonia. Biography Born in Barcelona in 1894, in the breast of a family of the Catalan nobility being son of the historian and sigilógrafo Fernando de Sagarra i de Siscar. He attended a Jesuit high school and studied law at the University of Barcelona, initially with the purpose of entering into a diplomatic career. However, he quickly decided to become a writer and at the age of 18 won a prize of poetry in the Floral Games. He became a full-time journalist who worked as a correspondent in Germany and as a theatrical critic. However, his main work developed in the field of literature, especially in theatre and poetry, that he wrote always in Catalan. Gauche Divine
() was the name given to an intellectual and artistic scene in 1960s and 1970s Barcelona, dubbed as elitist and associated to a bourgeois environment. It coalesced towards 1967, with the opening of the Bocaccio discothèque. The term of ''gauche divine'', ironic but not always pejorative, was coined by writer Joan de Sagarra in 1969.
