Jimmy Winston
James Edward Winston Langwith (20 April 1945 – 26 September 2020), known professionally as Jimmy Winston, was an English musician and actor. He was the original keyboard player with Small Faces. Winston had apparently previously worked under the stage name James Moody. His acting credits include the 1968 stage musical '' Hair'' and the 1972 '' Doctor Who'' serial '' Day of the Daleks''. Small Faces In early 1965, Winston, along with his acquaintance Steve Marriott, formed Small Faces with Ronnie Lane and Kenney Jones. While originally a guitarist, his role was soon shifted to become a keyboardist. Winston was fundamental in the band's emergence, as his parents owned the Ruskin Arms pub located in Manor Park, a place where the group would rehearse and occasionally perform. Stratford is a town in east London, England, within the ceremonial county of Greater London. Until 1965 it was within the historic county of Essex. "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" is the debut single released by the English rock group Small Faces, released in the UK on 6 August 1965. The song peaked at number 14 in the UK Singles Chart, and stayed on chart for a total of 14 weeks. It reached number 28 in Canada. Song profile The songwriting duo of the group Steve Marriott and Ronnie Lane already had the melody for the song, the inspiration coming from Solomon Burke's hit record " Everybody Needs Somebody to Love." However they had no lyrics, so their manager, Don Arden, brought in Ian Samwell and Brian Potter to provide the words for the song. The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number 27 and rose to number 14, just missing the all important Top Ten. ''No Blade of Grass'' is a 1970 apocalyptic science fiction film co-written, directed and produced by Cornel Wilde and starring Nigel Davenport, Jean Wallace, and John Hamill. It is an adaptation of John Christopher's novel '' The Death of Grass'' (1956) and follows the survivors of a plague that has hit London in the not too distant future. ''Doctor in the House'' is a British television comedy series based on a set of books and a film of the same name by Richard Gordon about the misadventures of a group of medical students. It was produced by London Weekend Television from 1969 to 1970. Writers for the ''Doctor in the House'' episodes were Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie and Bernard McKenna. Jeremy Summers (18 August 1931 – 14 December 2016) was a British television director and film director, known for his directorship of ITC such as '' The Saint''. Background Born in St Albans in 1931, Summers was born into a family of theatrical tradition and his father Walter Summers (1896-1973) was a film director and screenwriter. He directed nearly 50 different TV programmes between 1960 and 1999, including '' The Saint'' and '' Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)''. Career In his early career, Summers worked as a runner and then later assistant director on films such as '' The Dam Busters'' (1955) with Michael Anderson and ''Moby Dick'' (1956) with John Huston. ''The BBC Sessions'' (also known as ''BBC Sessions: 1965-1968'') is the second live album by the British rock group Small Faces, released on 15 November 1999 on Strange Fruit Records. It is a collection of recordings the group made for the BBC. While mostly being made up of tracks recorded for ''Saturday Club'' in 1966, it also features three songs recorded for ''Top Gear'' in 1968. Accompanying these tracks are four interviews with Steve Marriott, and one featuring Kenney Jones. Information The album was released on 15 November 1999 on Strange Fruit Records. For the US release, it was issued on Fuel 2000 the following year. Len Fico, president of Fuel 2000 states that a deal was made with the BBC and their partners on Strange Fruit Records. He stated that the project took two years to put together and that they had to track down the Small Faces in order to secure their performance rights. ''The Autumn Stone'' is a posthumous retrospective double album, and the second compilation album released in the UK by Small Faces in 1969 on the Immediate label. Album profile The double album contains most of the Small Faces' Immediate and Decca original 7" single releases, together with live recordings from a concert at Newcastle City Hall and previously unreleased material, some of which was possibly intended for the band's projected but unrealised fourth LP, ''1862''. Alongside the title track, the album contained an alternate version of "Afterglow Of Your Love" (which had been released as the Small Faces' final single earlier in the year), covers of two Tim Hardin songs ("If I Were A Carpenter" and "Red Balloon") and the instrumentals "Wide Eyed Girl On The Wall" and "Collibosher" (both of which are claimed to be unfinished backing tracks by the compilers of the ''Here Comes The Nice'' box set). ''From the Beginning'' is the first compilation album by the English rock band Small Faces. It was released by Decca Records of group material after the band had left the record label; it consisted of the band's Decca hit singles combined with various unreleased recordings. The album rose to Number 17 in the UK Album Chart. Album profile The album was released by Don Arden on Decca after the group had made a switch to the Immediate label headed by Andrew Loog Oldham. ''Thank Your Lucky Stars'' was a British television pop music show made by ABC Weekend TV, and broadcast on ITV from 1961 to 1966. Of all the show's presenters, Brian Matthew is perhaps the best remembered. Many of the leading pop groups of the time performed on it. As well as featuring British artists, it often included American guest stars. It would appear from the surviving footage that the bands mimed their latest 45. Occasionally a band was allowed to do two numbers (possibly the A-side and B-side sides of their latest single or an EP or LP track); bands of a higher status such as The Beatles or The Rolling Stones would sometimes play up to as many as four numbers. A typical 1961 programme listing included The Dale Sisters, Adam Faith, John Leyton, The Brook Brothers, Geoff Goddard and Dion. Ian McLagan
Ian Patrick McLagan (; 12 May 1945 – 3 December 2014) was an English keyboardist, best known as a member of the rock bands Small Faces and Faces. He also collaborated with the Rolling Stones and led his own band from the late 1970s. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Early life McLagan was born at West Middlesex Hospital, Isleworth, to Alec William McLagan, of Scottish descent, and Susan (née Young), from Mountrath, County Laois. He had an elder brother, Mike. The McLagan family lived in Hounslow, West London. Alec McLagan was an enthusiastic amateur skater, having been British speed-skating champion in 1928; a photograph of him in this role features on the cover of his son's solo album, Best of British (2000). He first started playing keyboards at the age of seven after his mother purchased an upright piano; one of his first appearances was in a group entitled 'the Blue Men' in which he played rhythm guitar.
