Jesus María is a town and municipality in the Santander Department Santander () is a department of Colombia. Santander inherited the name of one of the nine original states of the United States of Colombia. It is located in the central northern part of the country, borders the Magdalena River to the east, Bo ..., in northeastern Colombia. The township was founded in the middle of the 18th century, and in 1870 it was elevated to the category of city, after rapid population growth. Finally in 1887 it became a municipality. Colombia is a unitary state, unitary republic made up of thirty-two administrative divisions referred to as departments (Spanish language, Spanish: ''departamentos'', sing. ) and one Capital District (''Capital districts and territories, Distrito Capital'').
