Jerzy Duszyński (biochemist)
Jerzy Duszyński (; born 6 March 1949) is a Polish biochemist and professor of biological sciences. Since 2015 he has been President of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is a former director of the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2003–08), a former Polish deputy minister of science (2008–09), and a former Dean of Division II—Biological Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2011–14). He has held the academic title of Full Professor since 1993, has been a corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2007, and a member of Academia Europaea since 2007. Education and career Jerzy Duszyński earned his undergraduate degree in biology from the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences at the University of Warsaw. Adenine nucleotide translocator (ANT), also known as the ADP/ATP translocase (ANT), ADP/ATP carrier protein (AAC) or mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier, exchanges free ATP with free ADP across the inner mitochondrial membrane. ANT is the most abundant protein in the inner mitochondrial membrane and belongs to the mitochondrial carrier family. Free ADP is transported from the cytoplasm to the mitochondrial matrix, while ATP produced from oxidative phosphorylation is transported from the mitochondrial matrix to the cytoplasm, thus providing the cell with its main energy currency. Calcium metabolism is the movement and regulation of calcium ions (Ca2+) ''in'' (via the gut) and ''out'' (via the gut and kidneys) of the body, and ''between'' body compartments: the blood plasma, the extracellular and intracellular fluids, and bone. Bone acts as a calcium storage center for deposits and withdrawals as needed by the blood via continual bone remodeling. An important aspect of calcium metabolism is plasma calcium homeostasis, the regulation of calcium ions in the blood plasma within narrow limits. The level of the calcium in plasma is regulated by the hormones parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin.
