Jens Garðar Helgason
Jens Garðar Helgason (born 15 December 1976) is an Icelandic politician. He is a member of the Icelandic Parliament for the Independence Party after leading list in the Northeast constituency for the 2024 Icelandic parliamentary election. Jens was born and raised in Eskifjörður. He was a student at Akureyri Junior College, studied business administration at the University of Iceland and holds an MBA from the Norwegian School of Economics. Jens was chairman of the Fjarðabyggð municipal council from 2010 to 2018, he was chairman of the from 2014 to 2020 and vice chairman of the from 2017 to 2020. Jens ran for the first place for the Independence Party for the 2024 Icelandic parliamentary election and performed better than the incumbent leader of the party in the constituency, Njáll Trausti Friðbertsson, when ranked first on the candidate list at the constituency assembly on 20 October 2024. Althing
The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the Parliamentary sovereignty, supreme Parliament, national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at ('Thing (assembly), thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík. After Iceland's union with Norway in 1262, the Althing lost its legislative power, which was not restored until 1904 when Iceland gained home rule from Denmark. For 641 years, the Althing did not serve as the parliament of Iceland; ultimate power rested with the Norwegian, and subsequently the Danish throne. Njáll Trausti Friðbertsson
Njáll Trausti Friðbertsson (born 31 December 1969) is an Icelandic Independence Party politician. He was elected to the Althing in 2016, by the Northeast constituency. In 1994, Njáll won Draumaliðsdeildin, the Icelandic fantasy football competition hosted by Dagblaðið Vísir. Njáll credited watching a lot more of football that summer than he had done in the years before and also gave a mention to the points scored by former Yugoslavian striker Milos Tanasic. Born in Reykjavík, he has been an air traffic controller in Akureyri since 1992. Ríkisútvarpið (, ; abbr. RÚV ) is Iceland's national public broadcasting, public-service broadcasting organization. Founded in 1930, it operates from studios in the country's capital, Reykjavík, as well as regional centres around the country. Fjarðabyggð () is a municipality located in eastern Iceland, in the Eastern Region. History The municipality was formed in 1998 with the union of the former municipalities of Eskifjörður, Neskaupstaður and Reyðarfjörður. Akureyri Junior College
The Akureyri Junior College ( , regionally also ; ) is an Icelandic gymnasium (academic secondary school). It is one of the oldest educational institutions in Iceland. The Menntaskólinn á Akureyri traces its roots to the ancient school in Hólar in Hjaltadalur valley, founded in the beginning of Jón Ögmundsson's episcopacy in 1130. Operation of that school was discontinued in 1802 but a campaign to reopen the school of the 'Northland' was soon launched. Success came in 1880 when a 'learned school' was opened at Möðruvellir in the valley of Hörgárdalur. The building in Möðruvellir burnt down in 1902 and the school was moved to Akureyri, where it is currently located. Today the Junior College is attended by about 700 pupils every year, and on the national day of Iceland, 17 June, approximately 120 students graduate yearly.
