Alquina, Indiana
Alquina was an unincorporated community in Jennings Township, Fayette County, Indiana. History Alquina was founded in 1813 by Joseph Vanmeter. One source speculates it was named after Alquines, in France. A post office was established at Alquina in 1832, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1903. Indiana State Road 44 (SR 44) in the State of Indiana begins in the west at Interstate 69 in Martinsville and runs eastward to the Ohio state line in Union County in two broken sections. It is broken in Franklin from Indiana State Road 144 and Interstate 65. Route description From Martinsville, its western terminus, at I-69, SR 44 heads east toward Franklin. Upon entering Franklin SR 44 ends at the intersection with State Road 144. (The route continues east as Jefferson St. and crosses US 31 and onto Forsythe and King Streets to Interstate 65.) State Road 1 (SR 1) is a north–south state highway in eastern Indiana, consisting of two segments. Its southern segment begins at U.S. Highway 50 and Interstate 275 in east-central Dearborn County, just east of Lawrenceburg, and ends at Interstate 469 south of Fort Wayne. Its northern segment begins at Interstate 69 on Fort Wayne's north side, and ends at U.S. Route 20 in east-central Steuben County, approximately east of Angola. Jonathan Jennings
Jonathan Jennings (March 27, 1784 – July 26, 1834) was an American politician who was the first governor of the State of Indiana and a nine-term congressman from Indiana. Born in either Hunterdon County, New Jersey, or Rockbridge County, Virginia, he studied law before migrating to the Indiana Territory in 1806. Jennings initially intended to practice law, but took jobs as an assistant at the federal land office at Vincennes and assistant to the clerk of the territorial legislature to support himself and pursued interests in land speculation and politics. Jennings became involved in a dispute with the territorial governor, William Henry Harrison, that soon led him to enter politics and set the tone for his early political career. In 1808 Jennings moved to the eastern part of the Indiana Territory and settled near Charlestown, in Clark County.
