Jen Pawol
Jennifer Pawol (born December 29, 1976) is an American baseball umpire who currently works in Minor League Baseball (MiLB), and is on the call-up list for Major League Baseball. She is just the seventh woman to work as a professional baseball umpire. Early life Attending West Milford High School in West Milford, New Jersey, Pawol played soccer and softball, attending Hofstra University on an athletic scholarship and playing as a catcher in Division-I softball for the Hofstra Pride softball, Pride. It was during this time that she began umpiring softball games. In 2001, she participated in the Women's Baseball World Series as a member of the United States women's national baseball team. Before going into professional umpiring, Pawol was an art teacher. She is a graduate of the Pratt Institute (Bachelors of Fine Arts, B.F.A.) and Hunter College (Masters of Fine Arts, M.F.A.). International League
The International League (IL) is a Minor League Baseball league that operates in the United States. Along with the Pacific Coast League, it is one of two leagues playing at the Triple-A (baseball), Triple-A level, which is one grade below Major League Baseball (MLB). The league traces its roots to 1884, while the modern IL began in 1912. Following MLB's reorganization of the minor leagues in 2021, it operated as the Triple-A East for one season before switching back to its previous moniker in 2022. It is so named because throughout much of its history the International League had teams in Canada and Cuba as well as those in the United States. Since 2008, however, all of its teams have been based in the US. Hofstra Pride Softball
The Hofstra Pride softball team represents Hofstra University in NCAA Division I college softball. Ria Cortesio
Ria Cortesio is an American former baseball umpire, working games at the Double A level. In 2007, she became the first woman since Pam Postema in 1989 to work a Major league exhibition game. The 2007 season was her ninth and final professional season and fifth at the Double A level. Umpiring career Cortesio attended five-week umpire school. She began umpiring professionally in the minor leagues in 1999, in the short-season Pioneer League. In 2002, she began umpiring at the Double A level, spending five seasons in the Southern League. She worked both the 2006 All-Star Futures Game and Home Run Derby. On March 29, 2007, she became the first woman umpire to work in a Major League Baseball exhibition game since Postema in 1989, when she served alternately as the first and third base umpire in a spring training game between the Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks. Pam Postema
Pamela Postema (born April 1954 in Willard, Ohio) is an American former baseball umpire. In 1988 she became the first female baseball umpire to officiate a Major League Baseball spring training game. For her unique contributions to the game, she was inducted into the Baseball Reliquary's Shrine of the Eternals in 2000. Education After high school, Postema spent a year working in a rubber factory in Willard, Ohio before moving with her sister to Florida where she planned to enroll in the University of Florida. While in Florida, she saw a newspaper ad for Al Somers Umpire School in Daytona Beach. Postema first applied to the Al Somers Umpire School in Florida (now the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School) in 1976. She submitted three applications before finally being enrolled. Spring Training
Spring training, also called spring camp, is the preseason of the Summer Professional Baseball Leagues, such as Major League Baseball (MLB), and it is a series of practices and exhibition games preceding the start of the regular season. Spring training allows new players to try out for the roster and position spots, and it gives established players practice time prior to competitive play. The Pacific Coast League (PCL) is a Minor League Baseball league that operates in the Western United States. Along with the International League, it is one of two leagues playing at the Triple-A (baseball), Triple-A level, which is one grade below Major League Baseball (MLB). Minor League Baseball (MiLB) is a professional baseball organization below Major League Baseball (MLB), constituted of teams affiliated with MLB clubs. Gulf Coast League
The Florida Complex League (FCL) is a rookie-level Minor League Baseball league that operates in Florida, United States. Before 2021, it was known as the Gulf Coast League (GCL). Together with the Arizona Complex League (ACL), it forms the lowest rung on the North American minor-league ladder. FCL teams play at the minor league spring training complexes of their parent Major League Baseball (MLB) clubs and are owned by those parent clubs. Admission is not charged to FCL games, and no concessions are sold. Every Grapefruit League team fields at least one team in the league.
