Jelsa, Norway
Jelsa is a village in Suldal municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The village is located along the inner part of the Boknafjorden, near the mouths of the Sandsfjorden and Erfjorden. The village is the site of a school, store, gas station, and some small stores. There was a barrel factory here until it closed in 2009. Jelsa Church is located in this village. The village was the administrative centre of the old municipality of Jelsa which existed from 1838 until 1965. Sandsfjorden
Sandsfjorden or Sandsfjord is a fjord in Suldal Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The long fjord is the northernmost arm of main Boknafjorden in Rogaland county. The fjord begins at the confluence of the Saudafjorden and Hylsfjorden, just north of the village of Sand. It then travels to the southwest until it reaches the island of Foldøy, where the fjord joins the main Boknafjorden. The villages of Jelsa and Hebnes are located on either side of the mouth of the fjord. The Sandsfjord Bridge crosses the fjord near the village of Marvik. The bridge opened in the fall of 2015 and it connects the Norwegian National Road 13 to the Norwegian County Road 46. It replaced a ferry route across the fjord from Ropeid to Sand. Nedstrand
Nedstrand (locally, ''Stranda'') is a village in Tysvær municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The village is on the Nedstrand peninsula's southeast coast, at the confluence of the Nedstrandsfjorden and Vindafjorden. The village of Hindaråvåg lies just west of Nedstrand, and Nedstrand Church is there. The village has a population (2019) of 227 and a population density of . The village is a regular ferry stop on routes to the Sjernarøyane islands (across the Nedstrandsfjorden) and to Hebnes (across the Vindafjorden). Both of those stops have other connections all over the region. The area was historically part of the municipality of Nedstrand, and was a regional customs office for the huge timber industry in the Ryfylke district. Jelsa (municipality)
Jelsa is a former municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1838 until 1965. It encompassed area that surrounds the Sandsfjorden in the present-day municipalities of Suldal, Hjelmeland, and Stavanger. The administrative centre was the village of Jelsa, where Jelsa Church is located. History The parish of ''Jælse'' was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). In 1859, the municipality was split, with the northern district becoming the municipality of Sand. The split left Jelsa with a population of 2,606. On 1 January 1914, the eastern district was split off as the new municipality of Erfjord. This left Jelsa with 1,539 residents. On 1 January 1965 the municipality of Jelsa was dissolved due to recommendations by the Schei Committee. Jelsa Church
Jelsa Church ( no, Jelsa kyrkje) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Suldal Municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Jelsa. It is the church for the Jelsa parish which is part of the Ryfylke prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Stavanger. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1647 using designs by an unknown architect. The church seats about 150 people. History The earliest existing historical records of the church date back to the year 1280, but it was not new that year. The original church was a stave church that was located on the same site as the present building. In 1647, the old stave church was torn down and replaced. The west gable of the new church appears to have been built of staves from the older church. The new church has a rectangular nave and a somewhat narrower and lower choir. Erfjorden
Erfjorden is a fjord in the municipalities Suldal and Hjelmeland in Rogaland county, Norway. The long fjord begins at the small village of Tysse in Suldal and heads south past the village of Hålandsosen before making a sharp turn to the west before emptying into the larger Nedstrandsfjorden. The Erfjord Bridge crosses the fjord, just north of Hålandsosen. The innermost part of the fjord (north of the bridge) is sometimes referred to as the ''Tyssefjorden''. Boknafjorden
Boknafjord or Boknafjorden ( en, Bokna Fjord) is a fjord located in Rogaland county, Norway. The huge fjord lies between the cities of Stavanger and Haugesund and dominates the central part of the county. The main part of the fjord is shared between the municipalities of Kvitsøy, Stavanger, Tysvær, Bokn, and Karmøy. There are dozens of smaller fjords that branch off the main part of the fjord, reaching most municipalities in the county.
