Jedi (engine)
Jedi is a game engine developed primarily by Ray Gresko for LucasArts. It is very similar to the Build (game engine), Build engine used in ''Duke Nukem 3D''. While not a true 3D engine, it supported a three-dimensional environment with no limitations in the 3rd dimension (Z). In ''Doom (1993 video game), Doom'', environments or levels were limited to existing in the X-Y plane only – levels were laid out two-dimensionally: while floor and ceiling heights could differ, areas could not overlap vertically. The Jedi Engine had support for areas or rooms (called "sectors") on top of one another, a trait that it shared with the Build engine. In the ''Star Wars: Dark Forces, Dark Forces'' revision of the engine, the renderer could not display two rooms situated on top of each other simultaneously. This capability was added for ''Outlaws (1997 video game), Outlaws''. The Jedi Engine also included the ability to jump and crouch, the ability to look up and down, and atmospheric effects ...

Dark Forces
''Star Wars: Dark Forces'' is a first-person shooter video game developed and published by LucasArts. It was released in 1995 for MS-DOS and Macintosh, and in 1996 for the PlayStation. The story is set in the ''Star Wars'' expanded universe and begins shortly before the original ''Star Wars'' film, before flashing forward to a year after the film's events. The game's protagonist and playable character is Kyle Katarn, a mercenary working on behalf of the Rebel Alliance who discovers the Galactic Empire's secret Dark Trooper Project, which involves the development of a series of powerful new battle droids and power-armored stormtroopers. ''Dark Forces'' uses the Jedi game engine, which was developed specifically for the game. The engine adds gameplay features that were uncommon to the first-person shooter genre at the time of release, including level designs with multiple floors, and the ability to look up and down. Reverse Engineer
Reverse engineering (also known as backwards engineering or back engineering) is a process or method through which one attempts to understand through deductive reasoning how a previously made device, process, system, or piece of software accomplishes a task with very little (if any) insight into exactly how it does so. Depending on the system under consideration and the technologies employed, the knowledge gained during reverse engineering can help with repurposing obsolete objects, doing security analysis, or learning how something works. Although the process is specific to the object on which it is being performed, all reverse engineering processes consist of three basic steps: information extraction, modeling, and review. Information extraction is the practice of gathering all relevant information for performing the operation. Modeling is the practice of combining the gathered information into an abstract model, which can be used as a guide for designing the new object or syst ...

Game Engine Recreation
Game engine recreation is a type of video game engine remastering process whereby a new game engine is Code rewriting, rewritten from scratch as a Clone (computing), clone of the original with the ability to load the original game's data files such as Video game music, music, Texture mapping, textures, Scripting language, scripts, Shader, shaders, Level (video gaming), levels, and more. The new engine should read these data files and, in theory, load and understand them in a way that is indistinguishable from the original. The result of a proper engine clone is often the ability to play a game on modern systems that the old game could no longer run on. It also opens the possibility of community collaboration, as many engine remake projects tend to be open source. Game engine recreation can be beneficial to game publishers because the legal use of a re-creation still requires the original data files, as a player must still purchase the original game in order to legally play the re-cr ...

Open Source
Open source is source code that is made freely available for possible modification and redistribution. Products include permission to use and view the source code, design documents, or content of the product. The open source model is a decentralized software development model that encourages open collaboration. A main principle of Open-source software, open source software development is peer production, with products such as source code, blueprints, and documentation freely available to the public. The open source movement in software began as a response to the limitations of proprietary code. The model is used for projects such as in open source appropriate technology, and open source drug discovery. Open source promotes universal access via an open-source or free license to a product's design or blueprint, and universal redistribution of that design or blueprint. Before the phrase ''open source'' became widely adopted, developers and producers used a variety of other terms, suc ...
