Jean Crépin
Jean Crépin (1 September 1908 – 4 May 1996) was a French Army officer during World War II, the First Indochina War and the Algerian War. A lifelong Gaullist, he played a decisive role in many conflicts of the 20th century. He is also credited for being the driving force behind the development of the Exocet missiles and other weaponry. After his retirement from the army in 1967 he became CEO of a aerospace manufacturer Nord Aviation. In 1970 he was Vice president of SNIAS (later Aérospatiale) and president of Euromissile. Crépin died in May 1996. Exocet
The Exocet () is a French-built anti-ship missile whose various versions can be launched from Warship, surface vessels, Submarine, submarines, Helicopter, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Etymology The missile's name was given by M. Guillot, then the technical director at Nord Aviation. It is the French word for flying fish, from the Latin ''exocoetus'', a transliteration of the Greek language, Greek name for the fish that sometimes flew into a boat: (''exōkoitos''), literally "lying down outside (, ), sleeping outside". Description The Exocet is built by MBDA, a European missile company. Development began in 1967 by Nord as a ship-launched weapon named the MM38. A Companion of Liberation () is a member of the Order of the Liberation, created on November 16, 1940, by General de Gaulle as "leader of the Free French" to "reward the people or military and civilian communities who have distinguished themselves in the work of liberation of France and its empire". Description Five communes (Paris, Île de Sein, Nantes, Grenoble and Vassieux-en-Vercors), 18 combat units including two warships, and 1,038 people count among the Companions of the Liberation during the signing of the decree of foreclosure of the order of the Liberation. Of the 1,038 companions, 271 were appointed posthumously. The youngest, who died at 14, is Mathurin Henrio. Seventy-three foreigners or French-born foreigners, of 25 different nationalities, were made companions. Among the most famous are Dwight D. Lists Of Légion D'honneur Recipients
The French government gives out the Legion of Honour awards, to both French and foreign nationals, based on a recipient's exemplary services rendered to France, or to the causes supported by France. This award is divided into five distinct categories (in ascending order), i.e. three ranks: Knight, Officer, Commander, and two titles: Grand Officer and Grand Cross. Knight is the most common and is awarded for either at least 20 years of public service or acts of military or civil bravery. The rest of the categories have a quota for the number of years of service in the category below before they can be awarded. The Office rank requires a minimum of eight years as a Knight, and the Commander, the highest civilian category for a non-French citizen, requires a minimum of five years as an Officer. Euromissile
Euromissile was a European consortium set up in the 1970s by France's Aérospatiale and West Germany's DASA, DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG to produce the Euromissile HOT anti-tank missile. On April 5, 1991, Thomson-CSF joined the Euromissile Economic Interest Group (GIE) to jointly develop the short-range anti-aircraft system Crotale (missile), Crotale NG. Later on Aérospatiale-Matra, DASA, DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG (DASA) (as well as Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA, Construcciones Aeronáuticas SA (CASA)) merged on 10 July 2000 to form the ''European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company'' (EADS), now known as Airbus.
