Jawbox
Jawbox is an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C., formed in 1989. The band currently consists of J. Robbins (vocals/guitar), Kim Coletta (bass), Zach Barocas (drums), and Brooks Harlan (guitars/vocals). The original lineup consisted of Robbins, Coletta, and Adam Wade (drums). Jawbox released their first two full-lengths '' Grippe'' (1991) and ''Novelty'' (1992) on the local independent label Dischord Records, eventually becoming the third best-selling band on the label, behind Minor Threat and Fugazi. Bill Barbot joined the band as an additional guitarist and vocalist after the release of ''Grippe'', and Barocas replaced Wade on drums after the release of ''Novelty''. Jawbox signed to the major label Atlantic Records and released their third album '' For Your Own Special Sweetheart'' in 1994, which spawned the band's most recognizable song " Savory". Jawbox (album)
''Jawbox'' is the fourth and most recent album by American post-hardcore band Jawbox. The album was released by TAG Recordings, a subsidiary of Atlantic Records. In the months following the album's release, the band was dropped from TAG and thus from Atlantic. The album is much more commercial than its predecessor, '' For Your Own Special Sweetheart''. Music videos were produced for the tracks "Mirrorful" and Tori Amos cover "Cornflake Girl", with the latter being a hidden track. The cover became a surprise (albeit minor) hit in the alternative and college radio scene, thus the video was filmed. The cover was omitted from the album's 2015 LP reissue. Along with those two tracks, promotional singles were also created for "Absenter" and "His Only Trade". It was Jawbox's final studio album before disbanding in 1997. For Your Own Special Sweetheart
''For Your Own Special Sweetheart'' is the third album by Washington D.C. post-hardcore band, Jawbox. It was produced by Ted Niceley, best known for his work with Fugazi. This would be the band's major label debut, as they had left Dischord Records to sign with Atlantic Records. It is also the first album to feature Zachary Barocas on drums, as he replaced original drummer Adam Wade two years prior. The album was not much of a commercial success, despite being well received by critics. " Savory" was the album's first single, followed by "Cooling Card". "Motorist" and "Jackpot Plus!" had previously been released on a Dischord single and were newly recorded for this album. The album was remastered and reissued by DeSoto in 2009 with three bonus tracks (b-sides from the "Savory" single) and new cover art. Reception The album received very positive reviews upon release. Grippe (album)
''Grippe'' is the first album by the post-hardcore band Jawbox. It was released in 1991 on Dischord Records. This is the only Jawbox album with the band as a trio, since second guitarist Bill Barbot would join the band shortly after the album's release for its touring cycle. Background "Consolation Prize" appeared on a cassette-tape that had been floating around the hardcore scene albeit in demo form (this version was called simply "Consolation"). "Bullet Park" had also been previously released in demo form, but on a '' Maximumrocknroll'' compilation, in 1989. "Footbinder" appeared on a compilation for the indie label Simple Machines shortly before the album release. The last four tracks on the album had previously been released as a self-titled EP in 1990. The original vinyl and cassette copies of the album does not include the last five tracks. DeSoto Records
DeSoto Records is an American record label based in Washington, D.C. History DeSoto was founded in 1989 and is run by husband and wife team Bill Barbot and Kim Coletta (both formerly of the band Jawbox). It was first founded by members of the band Edsel to release their first single: "My Manacles." Jawbox was next to use the name DeSoto for their first EP. DeSoto has released over 40 records, 7" singles, CDs, and LP vinyl records. It is distributed by Fontana Distribution. The label decided in 2002 to stop releasing new music and focus instead on its catalog. They partnered with Dischord Records to re-release some of Jawbox's records. ''Novelty'' is the second studio album by the American post-hardcore band Jawbox, released by Dischord Records in May 1992. The songs "Tongues" and "Ones and Zeros" were previously released as a single, and "Static" was featured on a split 7-inch with Tar. A video was produced for the track "Cutoff." ''Novelty'' was the band's first album with guitar player Bill Barbot and last album with drummer Adam Wade. Critical reception ''Trouser Press'' opined that "the mushy mix wastes the dual guitars, and Robbins' vocals frequently seem dreary and monochromatic." Savory (song)
"Savory" (released as "Savory + 3") is the first single released by Jawbox from their 1994 major label debut, '' For Your Own Special Sweetheart''. The song is a description of the female body, according to AllMusic, but in a very cryptic form. The three other songs from the single were later included as bonus tracks for the 2009 reissue of ''For Your Own Special Sweetheart''. Music video The music video was released in early 1994 and gained some MTV airplay, particularly on programs like ''120 Minutes'', but the song never charted. The video depicts Jawbox performing at a little girl's birthday party, where the birthday girl receives an assortment of unusual gifts, including weapons and dentures. The video shows the band dressed in formal suits, a change from their old video for "Cutoff". Post-hardcore
Post-hardcore is a punk rock music genre that maintains the aggression and intensity of hardcore punk but emphasizes a greater degree of creative expression. Like the term " post-punk", the term "post-hardcore" has been applied to a broad constellation of groups. Initially taking inspiration from post-punk and noise rock, post-hardcore began in the 1980s with bands like Hüsker Dü and Minutemen. The genre expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with releases by bands from cities which had established hardcore scenes, such as Fugazi from Washington, D.C. as well as groups such as Big Black, Jawbox, Quicksand, and Shellac who stuck closer to post-hardcore's noise rock roots. Dischord Records became a major nexus of post-hardcore during this period. TAG Recordings
TAG Recordings was an imprint of Atlantic Records, created in 1994 to host Atlantic's stable of alternative rock artists and capitalize on the genre's popularity at that time. The roster consisted of artists already signed to Atlantic, such as The Lemonheads and Jawbox, and bolstered with new signings like Fountains of Wayne, Dinosaur Jr. bassist Mike Johnson, and The Bottle Rockets. TAG also released soundtrack CDs for two movies, '' White Man's Burden'' (1995) and '' I Shot Andy Warhol'' (1996). Despite wide acclaim for many of their releases, like Fountains of Wayne's self-titled debut or their reissue of The Bottle Rockets' '' The Brooklyn Side'', the imprint fared poorly in terms of sales. Edsel (band)
Edsel was an American post-hardcore band from Washington, D.C. who formed in 1988. They released four albums on a yearly basis from 1992 to 1995, which included the ''Techniques of Speed Hypnosis'' album on the major label Relativity Records in 1995. They went on a hiatus in 1997, followed by brief reformations from 2000 to 2001 and 2012 to 2013. Fugazi (; ) is an American post-hardcore band formed in Washington, D.C., in 1986. The band consists of guitarists and vocalists Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, bassist Joe Lally, and drummer Brendan Canty. They were noted for their style-transcending music, DIY ethical stance, manner of business practice, and contempt for the music industry.
