The Social Democratic Party (, , JF) (, JF) is a social democratic political party on the Faroe Islands, led by Aksel V. Johannesen. History The Social Democratic Party was founded on 25 September 1925 by members of Faroese trade unions. Its youth organization '' Sosialistiskt Ungmannafelag'' (Socialist Youth) was founded in 1965. At the 2004 general election on 20 January 2004, the party received 21.8% of the popular vote and therefore won 7 out of 33 seats in the Løgting. At the 2008 general election on 19 January 2008, the party received 19.3% of the popular vote and therefore won 6 out of 33 seats. In the 2011 election for the Danish Folketing, the party improved its vote share to 21.0%, and took one of the two Faroese seats previously held by Republic. Sjúrður Skaale
Sjúrður Skaale (born 8 March 1967) is a Faroe Islands, Faroese politician, comedian and former journalist currently serving as one of the two Faroese members of the Folketing for the Social Democratic Party (Faroe Islands), Social Democratic Party since 2011. From 2008 to 2011 he was a member of the Løgting. Background He took his examen artium at Føroya Studentaskúli og HF-skeið in 1987, and obtained his Cand.polit. after studying political science in Copenhagen and Madrid. He also studied Spanish language, Spanish in Colombia and Copenhagen. Marita Petersen
Marita Petersen () (née Johansen (); 21 October 1940 – 26 August 2001) was the first and to date only female Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands and the first female speaker of the Løgting (Parliament). She was elected to the Løgting in 1988 for Javnaðarflokkurin (The Social Democratic Party). In January 1993, she was elected to the post of prime minister, which she held until September 1994. Later, she became chairman of the parliament from 1994 to 1995. She was Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands in a very difficult time with economic crisis. Marita Petersen died of cancer in 2001. Career Early life Petersen was born in Vágur. She was educated at the Hellerup seminarium in Denmark, and trained as a teacher in 1964. She worked as a teacher in Copenhagen and Esbjerg from 1964 to 1967, in Tórshavnar kommunuskúli (one of the public schools in Tórshavn) from 1967 to 1989. Peter Mohr Dam
Peter Mohr Dam (11 August 1898 – 8 November 1968) was a Faroe Islands politician who was one of the founders of the Social Democratic Javnaðarflokkurin party in 1926. Biography Dam was born on 11 August 1898, in Skopun, Faroe Islands. The first position he took was becoming a teacher in Tvøroyri. He then became a member of the town council of Tvøroyri from 1925 until his death, and later mayor of the same city from 1934–1957. He was member of the Faroese Løgting from 1928 until his death in 1968. He was also chairman of the Social Democratic Javnaðarflokkurin party from 1936 until his death. He was member of the Danish Folketing as one of two Faroese members from 1947–1957, 1964–1967, and 1968. Jóannes Eidesgaard
Jóannes Dan Eidesgaard (born 19 April 1951) is a former Faroese politician. He was the prime minister of the Faroe Islands from 2004, starting shortly after the general election of 20 January 2004, until 26 September 2008, when a new coalition took office. He served as finance minister from 1996 to 1998 and again from 2008 to 2011. He was a member of the Danish Folketing representing the Faroe Islands from 11 March 1998 until 20 November 2001. Life and political career Jóannes Eidesgaard was born on 19 April 1951, in Tvøroyri on the island of Suðuroy, where he later became a senior-school teacher. 2015 Faroese General Election
General elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 1 September 2015. 2015 Danish general election, Elections for the Danish Folketing were held beforehand on 18 June. Background On 4 August 2015 the Løgting passed a motion that criticized Prime Minister Kaj Leo Johannesen and former Minister of the Interior Kári P. Højgaard, accusing Johannesen of lying to the Løgting in connection with a 1 million Danish krone, kroner break fee clause in the contract led by the Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to build a List of tunnels of the Faroe Islands, sub-sea tunnel between Eysturoy and Streymoy. The Faroe Islands have a multi-party system, with numerous parties in which no one party often has a chance of gaining power alone, and parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. There are two major ideological cleavages in Faroese politics. The Social Democratic Group
The Social Democratic Group is a social democratic party group in the Nordic Council, making up the largest group on the council. Their members come from all of the Nordic countries, and includes the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland. 2011 Danish Parliamentary Election
General elections were held in Denmark on 15 September 2011 to elect the 179 members of the Folketing. Of those 179, 175 members were elected in Denmark, two in the Faroe Islands and two in Greenland. The incumbent centre-right coalition led by Venstre lost power to a centre-left coalition led by the Social Democrats making Helle Thorning-Schmidt the country's first female Prime Minister. 2011 Faroese General Election
Early general elections were held in the Faroe Islands on 29 October 2011. Faroese law states that new elections must be held at least once every four years; however, either the Prime Minister (''Løgmaður'') or a majority of the members of the Faroese Parliament (the ''Løgting'') may call an election before the end of this period. The previous elections having been held on 20 January 2008, the latest date on which the next elections could have been held was 19 January 2012. However, the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands, Kaj Leo Johannesen, announced on 27 September 2011 that elections would be held on 29 October 2011. He gave no particular reason for his decision.
