Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing
The (JASM) is a joint-venture, which is majority-owned by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and minority-owned by Sony Semiconductor Solutions, Denso, and Toyota respectively. The company was established to build and operate a US$23 billion semiconductor factory (TSMC Fab 23) in Kikuyo, Kumamoto. Operations At the Phase 1 factory, from December 2024, JASM produces semiconductors on 12-inch wafers at a monthly capacity of 55,000 units using 12/16 nm FinFET and 22/28 nm process technologies. The main products are ASICs for image sensors and automotive applications. In February 2024 TSMC announced that due to increasing demand of foundry-customers, the existing fab-complex of JASM (with Phase 1 leading up to production), will be expanded with a second manufacturing-location at site (Phase 2), this new facility is scheduled to come online by end of 2027 with start of construction projected for end of 2024 – This increases the overall ...

Semiconductors
A semiconductor is a material with electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator. Its conductivity can be modified by adding impurities (" doping") to its crystal structure. When two regions with different doping levels are present in the same crystal, they form a semiconductor junction. The behavior of charge carriers, which include electrons, ions, and electron holes, at these junctions is the basis of diodes, transistors, and most modern electronics. Some examples of semiconductors are silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, and elements near the so-called "metalloid staircase" on the periodic table. After silicon, gallium arsenide is the second-most common semiconductor and is used in laser diodes, solar cells, microwave-frequency integrated circuits, and others. Silicon is a critical element for fabricating most electronic circuits. Semiconductor devices can display a range of different useful properties, such as passing current more easily in one ...

Semiconductor Industry In Taiwan
The semiconductor industry, including Integrated Circuit (IC) manufacturing, design, and packaging, forms a major part of Taiwan's IT industry. Due to its strong capabilities in OEM wafer manufacturing and a complete industry supply chain, Taiwan has been able to distinguish itself as a leading microchip manufacturer and dominate the global marketplace. Taiwan’s semiconductor sector accounted for US$115 billion, around 20 percent of the global semiconductor industry. In sectors such as foundry operations, Taiwanese companies account for 50 percent of the world market, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) the biggest player in the foundry market. Overview In the 1970s, policy decisions by technocrats like Li Kwoh-ting helped Taiwan pivot from low-tech manufacturing to high-tech industries. The 1976 RCA Project, one of the first significant policy shifts, facilitated critical technology transfer from the U.S., which led to Taiwan’s first IC plant and laid th ...

Semiconductor Industry In Japan
The Japanese semiconductor industry once dominated the world's semiconductor market, with its revenue share reaching 50% in the 1980s. Various explanations have been proposed for this dominance by Japanese semiconductor manufacturers. However, due to a combination of factors, including the shift towards fabless manufacturing in the global semiconductor industry, lack of investment caused by the Lost Decades, country's stagnant economy, high wages, Endaka, an appreciating yen, Four Asian Tigers, rapid industrialisation in the rest of Asia, and an agreement with the US to protect the American semiconductor industry, this had dwindled to approximately 10% by 2019. The areas where the country still remains competitive are semiconductor manufacturing equipment (Tokyo Electron (TEL), SCREEN Holdings, SCREEN, Advantest), wafers (Shin-Etsu Chemical, Shin-Etsu, SUMCO), Flash memory, NAND flash memory (Kioxia, formerly Toshiba Memory), and power semiconductor devices (Renesas Electronics, Rene ...

2020–2023 Global Chip Shortage
Between 2020 and 2023, there was a worldwide chip shortage affecting more than 169 industries, which led to major price increases, long queues, and reselling among consumers and manufacturers for automobiles, graphics cards, video game consoles, computers, household appliances, and other consumer electronics that require integrated circuits (commonly called "chips"). From early 2020, the effects of and the mitigation of the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions in supply chains and logistics which, coupled with a 13% increase in global demand for PCs owing to some countries' shift to a stay-at-home economy, impacted the availability of key chips necessary for the manufacturing of a broad range of electronics. The pandemic's impact on the manufacture of semiconductors in South Korea and Taiwan was cited as a cause for the shortage, with constrained supply impacting industries as broad as console gaming and the automotive industry. In February 2021, market analysts IHS Markit ...
