January 2–4, 2014 North American Blizzard
The January 2–4, 2014 North American blizzard was a major winter storm that affected much of the East Coast with snow, and frigid temperatures following the storm. The storm had dumped up to of snow in some areas, especially around Boston, Massachusetts. Meteorological synopsis On December 31, 2013, a low-pressure area formed near the Montana/Canada border and moved southward, along an arctic front, as a snow band formed ahead of the arctic front and extended from the central Great Plains to the lower Great Lakes region. The next day, the low-pressure area moved further south towards Texas, while continuing to produce snowfall across the Great Plains. The low then moved northeastward, reaching West Virginia on January 2, before dissipating. Arctic Front
The Arctic front is the semipermanent, semi-continuous weather front between the cold arctic air mass and the warmer air of the polar cell. It can also be defined as the southern boundary of the Arctic air mass. Mesoscale cyclones known as polar lows can form along the arctic front in the wake of extratropical cyclones. Arctic air masses in their wake are shallow with a deep layer of stable air above the shallow cold cool. Appearance in satellite images Arctic Fronts form in the Arctic region, and move southwards in southerly flows. When they reach Northern Europe, they have usually travelled over an open sea, and convective cloudiness has developed. The appearance of an Arctic Cold Fronts is then, essentially, that of a shallow Cold Front. Arctic Cold Fronts are usually so far north that Meteosat images alone are inadequate to recognize them. Cyclone Christina
Cyclone Christina was a European windstorm which caused three fatalities and €375 million in damage across western Europe in early January 2014, making landfall several days after Cyclone Anne (2014), Cyclone Anne. Forming out of Early January 2014 nor'easter, a powerful nor'easter off the coast of North America, Christina reached a peak intensity of as it crossed western Europe. The storm was more commonly referred to as Christine in Ireland. It was named Christina by the Free University Berlin on 3 January.
