Janet Finch
Dame Janet Valerie Finch DBE, DL, FAcSS (born 13 February 1946) is a British sociologist and academic administrator. She was Vice-Chancellor and Professor of Social Relations at Keele University, and has held a number of other public appointments in the UK. She currently holds an honorary position at the Morgan Centre for the Study of Relationships and Personal Life, based in the School of Social Sciences, University of Manchester. She is also part of Flooved advisory board. Biography Finch was educated at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School, Crosby, Merseyside, and then Bedford College, London (now merged with Royal Holloway College, London (RHC)) where she obtained BA in sociology. She obtained a PhD in sociology from the University of Bradford in 1975. She was made an Honorary Fellow of RHC in 1999. Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding valuable service in a wide range of useful activities. It comprises five classes of awards across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a Orders, decorations, and medals of the United Kingdom#Modern honours, knight if male or a dame (title), dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with the order, but are not members of it. The order was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V, who created the order to recognise 'such persons, male or female, as may have rendered or shall hereafter render important services to Our Empire'. Research Excellence Framework
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is a research impact evaluation of British Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is the successor to the Research Assessment Exercise and it was first used in 2014 to assess the period 2008–2013. REF is undertaken by the four UK higher education funding bodies: Research England, the Scottish Funding Council (SFC), Medr (preceded by Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW)), and the Department for the Economy, Northern Ireland (DfE). Its stated aims are to: *inform the allocation of block-grant research funding to HEIs based on research quality; *provide accountability for public investment in research and produce evidence of the benefits of this investment; and *provide insights into the health of research in HEIs in the UK. David Morgan (sociologist)
David Hopcraft John Morgan (30 July 1937 – 17 June 2020), known as David (H. J.) Morgan, was a British sociologist, who was President of the British Sociological Association (1997–1999) and editor of the association's journal ''Sociology''. His research focused on family sociology, gender studies and especially men's studies. Morgan was Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester, where he taught sociology from 1964, and where the Morgan Centre for the Study of Relationships and Personal Life is named in his honour. He also held Visiting Professorships at Keele University and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. He was co-editor of the Palgrave Studies in Family Sociology book series. Carol Smart
Carol Christine Smart (born 20 December 1948) is a feminist sociologist and academic at the University of Manchester. She has also conducted research about divorce and children of divorced couples. Smart is an important figure within the feminist criminology world. Her book titled ''Women, Crime and Criminology'', written in 1976, remains a key feminist critique of criminology. Smart was also the co-director of the Morgan Centre for the Study of Relationships and Personal Life at Manchester. Career Smart began her academic career by studying sociology at Portsmouth Polytechnic, which is now Portsmouth University. After completing her BA, she moved on to complete her master's degree in criminology from the University of Sheffield. She also completed her PhD in Socio-Legal studies also from Sheffield in 1983.
