Katla (dragon)
Katla is a fictional dragon from the Swedish children's book '' The Brothers Lionheart'', written by Astrid Lindgren. The name Katla is an old Norse female name and means either "''the kettle''" or "''the boiler''". It is also the name of a volcano in Iceland and a Heavy Metal band from Denmark. Katla is a huge ancient monster in the land of Nangijala, with the ability to spray flames from her mouth, just like its namesake volcano in Iceland. If a victim of the flames survives, the victim is paralyzed. Katla is controlled and will obey only a lur, which is owned by the evil warlord Tengil, who uses Katla to terrorize Nangijala. The scale of Katla is so strong that no weapon can injure her or even leave a scratch. When the citizens of Cherry Valley rise up against Tengil, he uses Katla to stop them, but loses the lur to Jonathan Lionheart, one of the protagonists. Jonathan uses the lur to make Katla kill Tengil, but Katla later burns Jonathan, wounding him. Before succumbing t ... They maintain a strong identity and are seen either as a separate cultural, ethnic or linguistic group or, occasionally, a distinct nationality. They speak Finland Swedish, which encompasses both a standard language and distinct dialects that are mutually intelligible with the dialects spoken in Sweden and, to a lesser extent, other Scandinavian languages. According to Statistics Finland, Swedish is the mother tongue of about 260,000 people in mainland Finland and of about 26,000 people in Åland, a self-governing archipelago off the west coast of Finland, where Swedish is the sole official language. Swedish-speakers comprise 5% of the total Finnish population or about 4.9% without Åland. The proportion has been steadily diminishing since the early 19th century, when Swedish was the mother tongue of approximately 15% of the population an ... Visor Om Slutet
''Visor om slutet'' () is an acoustic EP by the Finnish folk metal band Finntroll. It was released in 2003 by Spinefarm. It was the first album to feature Tapio Wilska on vocals, and the last to feature Jan "Katla" Jämsen, who was forced into retirement in 2003 due to a tumour developing on his vocal cords. ''Visor om slutet'' was released after a number of misfortunes befell several band members, including the death of guitarist Teemu Raimoranta, to whom the album is dedicated. It was recorded in a cabin off in the woods near Helsinki, coined as an "acoustic experiment," and features the use of traditionally non-metal instruments such as the kazoo. Though quite different in its sound to the folk metal-inspired '' Jaktens tid'', the album was a relative success. Ur Jordens Djup
''Ur jordens djup'' () is the fourth full-length Finntroll album. It was released on 28 March 2007. The album is the first to feature vocalist Mathias Lillmåns, who replaced Tapio Wilska in 2006. Unlike in ''Nattfödd'', the lyrics for this album were written by the band's original vocalist, Jan "Katla" Jämsen. This and other factors appear to contribute to a darker, more black metal feel. A music video for " Nedgång" was released in April. Concept The band approached the founding member Jämsen about writing the lyrics for this album. He chose to continue a semi-mythical saga which has been touched upon throughout Finntroll's career. The " kingshaman of the trolls" character Rivfader (Ripfather), was first introduced in their first demo, fittingly titled "Rivfader" (re-recorded for '' Midnattens widunder''), but Jämsen has said that the story truly originated in the song "Födosagan" on the second album, '' Jaktens tid''. The song "Eliytres", from ''Nattfödd'', also makes ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Humppa
Humppa is a type of music from Finland. It is related to jazz and fast foxtrot, played two beats to a bar ( or ) at around 110 to 130 beats per minute. Humppa is also the name of a few social dances done to humppa music. All dances involve a bounce that follows the strong bass. In Finnish, the word ''humppa'' can be used for social dancing. The name humppa was invented by Antero Alpola for a radio show in the 1950s. He picked it up from German Oktoberfest where the locals used the word oompah to describe the music. The band probably used a tuba, as the sound of tuba on the first beat is like ''hump'', the second beat coming as a ''pa''. Dances Three different dances are typically danced to humppa music. They existed long before the word "humppa" was coined. One form of Humppa dance is related to one-step, which arrived in Finland 1913. In this kind of humppa, both dancers take a step on each first beat (on "hump") and progress to the direction of dance. This is danced makin ... Folk Metal
Folk metal is a fusion genre of heavy metal music and traditional folk music that developed in Europe during the 1990s. It is characterised by the widespread use of folk instruments and, to a lesser extent, traditional singing styles (for example, Dutch Heidevolk, Danish Sylvatica and Spanish Stone of Erech). It also sometimes features soft instrumentation influenced by folk rock. The earliest folk metal bands were Skyclad (band), Skyclad from England and Cruachan (band), Cruachan from Ireland. Skyclad's debut album ''The Wayward Sons of Mother Earth'' was released in 1991 and would be considered a thrash metal album with some folk influences, unlike Cruachan’s early work which embraced the folk element as a defining part of their sound. It was not until 1994 and 1995 that other early contributors in the genre began to emerge from different regions of Europe and beyond. Among these early groups, the German band Subway to Sally spearheaded a different regional variation that over ...
