Jamestown is an unincorporated community located in Clinton County, Illinois, United States. History The first settlement near Jamestown was made in 1817 by John King and his brother-in-law.History of Marion and Clinton Counties, Illinois, Brink, McDonough & Co., 1881 In the 1840s and 1850s, many German farmers settled in the area. Jamestown itself was founded on June 4, 1850, by William Lenox and James Massey. In 2020, Cameron Modesitt became the mayor and Gavin Modesitt the treasurer. Tina's Tavern has a weekly town hall meeting to determine the future gatherings of the town. Churches There is one church in Jamestown, the St. Paul United Church of Christ. It was founded and constructed by the residents in Jamestown and surrounding areas as the St. Paul's Evangelical Church in 1908. Clinton County is located in the U.S. state of Illinois. At the 2020 census, the population was 37,762. Its county seat is Carlyle. In 1960, the United States Census Bureau placed the mean center of U.S. population in Clinton County. Clinton County is part of the St. Louis, MO-IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. History In 1805, prior to the establishment of the county, the territorial government established a post road from its capital (Vincennes, Indiana) to St. Louis, Missouri, passing through the county. In 1808 a wagon road was laid out through the future Clinton County. It extended from the Goshen Settlement to the Ohio salt works and crossed the Kaskaskia River at Carlyle. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
