James Hēnare
Sir James Clendon Tau Hēnare, (18 November 1911 – 2 April 1989) was a New Zealand tribal leader, military officer, farmer and community leader. He fought for four years with the Māori Battalion during the Second World War, was wounded at El Alamein, and with the rank of lieutenant colonel was the battalion's commanding officer when the war ended. He stood for Parliament for the National Party in the Northern Maori electorate on several occasions: , , , , and the 1963 by-election. Biography Of Māori descent, Hēnare identified with the Ngāpuhi iwi. He was born in Motatau, Northland, the son of Taurekareka Hēnare and Hera Paerata. He was educated at Sacred Heart College, Auckland and at Massey Agricultural College. Hēnare enrolled as a private in the Māori Battalion in 1940, training at Trenthham Military Camp. Motatau
Motatau or Mōtatau is a locality in the Northland Region of the North Island of New Zealand. Maromaku is to the east. The Taikirau Stream flows from east through Motatau and then runs northwest to join the Waiharakeke Stream. The North Auckland Line runs through Motatau. The name is Māori for "to speak to oneself". Motatau has two marae. Mōtatau Marae and Manu Koroki are a meeting place for the Ngāpuhi hapū of Ngāti Hine and Ngāti Te Tāwera. Matawaia Marae and Rangimarie meeting house is a meeting place of the Ngāpuhi hapū of Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Ngāherehere and Te Kau i Mua. Demographics Motatau is in an SA1 statistical area which covers . 1963 Northern Maori By-election
The Northern Maori by-election of 1963 was a by-election for the electorate of Northern Maori on 16 March 1963 during the 33rd New Zealand Parliament. The by-election resulted from the death of the previous member Tapihana Paikea on 7 January 1963. It was held the same day as the Otahuhu by-election. Te Tai Tokerau Māori are a group of Māori ''iwi'' (tribes) based on the Northland Peninsula of New Zealand's North Island. ''Hōkūlea'' is a performance-accurate ''waa kaulua'', a Polynesian culture, Polynesian double-hulled voyaging canoe. Launched on 8 March 1975 by the Polynesian Voyaging Society, it is best known for its 1976 Hawaii to Tahiti voyage completed with exclusively traditional navigation techniques.
