James Erskine, 6th Earl Of Buchan
James Erskine, 6th Earl of Buchan (died 1640), was the eldest son of John Erskine, Earl of Mar (1558–1634), John Erskine, Earl of Mar, by his second wife, Marie Stewart, Countess of Mar, Marie Stewart, daughter of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox, Esme Stewart, Duke of Lennox. He married Mary Douglas, 6th Countess of Buchan, daughter and heiress of James Douglas, 5th Earl of Buchan, and assumed the title of Earl of Buchan. This title was confirmed by a royal charter, dated 22 March 1617, the countess resigning her rights in his favour, and he was allowed the possession and exercise of all honours, dignities, and precedence of former earls of Buchan. A decree of the court of session, 25 July 1628, restored to Buchan and his wife the precedency over the earls of Eglinton, Montrose, Cassilis, Caithness, and Glencairn, which had been claimed by them, and granted by Decreet of Ranking of 1606, a former decree in 1606. Earl Of Buchan
The Mormaer () or Earl of Buchan () was originally the provincial ruler of the medieval province of Buchan. Buchan was the first Mormaerdom in the High Medieval Kingdom of the Scots to pass into the hands of a non-Scottish family in the male line. The earldom had three lines in its history, not counting passings from female heirs to sons. Today, it is held by the Erskine family as a peerage. The current holder is Harry Erskine, 18th Earl of Buchan (b. 1960). Subsidiary titles are Lord Cardross and Lord Auchterhouse and Baron Erskine. James Erskine (Aberdeen MP)
James Erskine (born 1671) was a Scottish soldier and politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1715. Erskine was the eldest surviving son of David Erskine, of Dun, Forfar and his wife Margaret Lumsden, daughter of Sir James Lumsden of Innergellie, Fife. He joined the army and in 1694 was an ensign in the 1st Foot. His father, who died in 1698, disinherited him in favour of his younger brother David. He was a lieutenant in 1701 and a captain in 1707 serving under the Duke of Marlborough in the War of the Spanish Succession. James Erskine, Lord Grange
James Erskine, Lord Grange (1679 – 20 January 1754) was a Scottish advocate, judge and politician. He served as Lord Justice Clerk and a Lord of Justiciary. Life The son of Charles Erskine, Earl of Mar, by his spouse Lady Mary, eldest daughter of George Maule, 2nd Earl of Panmure, he was also brother of John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar. Educated as an Faculty of Advocates, advocate, he was raised to the bench on 18 October 1706. He was nominated a Lord of Justiciary in place of David Home, Lord Crocerig on 6 June the same year, and took the title Lord Grange. James Erskine, Lord Alva
James Erskine, Lord Barjarg and Alva (20 June 1722 – 13 May 1796) was an 18th-century Scottish lawyer who rose to be a Senator of the College of Justice. For convenience his name was usually contracted to James Erskine, Lord Alva. Life He was born in Edinburgh, the son of Charles Erskine, Lord Tinwald, Lord Justice Clerk of Scotland, and his wife, Grisel Grierson. He became an advocate in 1743 and made Sheriff of Perth, Sheriff-Depute of Perthshire in 1748. In 1754 he became a Baron of the Exchequer and in 1758 Knight Marshal of Scotland. In 1761 he replaced Patrick Boyle, Lord Shewalton as a Senator of the College of Justice. On the death of his father in 1763 he inherited both his Edinburgh property, Drumsheugh House, and Alva House in Clackmannanshire. General James St Clair-Erskine, 2nd Earl of Rosslyn, (6 February 1762 – 18 January 1837) was a British Army officer and politician who served as Lord President of the Council from 1834 to 1835. Background and education Erskine was the son of Lieutenant-General Sir Henry Erskine, 5th Baronet, and Janet, daughter of Peter Wedderburn (a Lord of Session under the judicial title of Lord Chesterhall) and sister of Alexander Wedderburn, 1st Earl of Rosslyn. Lord Rosslyn's earldom had been created with special remainder to his nephew, Erskine. Erskine succeeded as sixth baronet in 1765, at the age of three, on the death of his father. Admiral of the Fleet Sir James Elphinstone Erskine, (2 December 1838 – 25 July 1911) was a Scottish Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer he served on the North America and West Indies Station. This was a difficult time in relations between the United Kingdom and the United States following the Trent Affair, an international diplomatic incident that occurred during the American Civil War when the United States Navy frigate USS ''San Jacinto'' intercepted the British mail packet RMS ''Trent''. Erskine went on to be Private Secretary to Lord Northbrook, First Lord of the Admiralty and then became Commodore on the Australia Station and in that capacity announced that, in order to provide support for the local people, the south coast of New Guinea would become a British protectorate. James Thorne Erskine, 14th Earl of Mar and 16th Earl of Kellie, Baron Erskine of Alloa Tower, (born 10 March 1949) is a Scottish peer and former Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. Educated at Eton, he was Page of Honour to Queen Elizabeth II in 1962 and 1963. He proceeded to Moray House College of Education, Edinburgh, before embarking on a career in social work with various Scottish local authorities.
