Jalpaiguri Municipality is the civic body that governs Jalpaiguri and its surrounding areas in Jalpaiguri Sadar subdivision of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal, India. History The name Jalpaiguri comes from the word Jalpai meaning Ceylon olive, which grew in the city and adjacent areas and Guri means a place. Civic administration Civic administration is the responsibility of the Jalpaiguri Municipality which is one of the oldest in West Bengal. Set up in 1885, it is headed by a chairman who is elected by the residents of the city. It has 25 wards that elect the ward councillors. Jalpaiguri (), is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of the Jalpaiguri district as well as of the Jalpaiguri division of West Bengal, covering the jurisdiction of the five districts of North Bengal.
