Jaime Mañalich
Jaime José Mañalich Muxi (born 7 June 1954) is a Chilean physician (nephrologist), and former Health Minister. He held the position during the first Piñera government (2010-2014) and assumed the role again in June 2019 until he was replaced in June 2020 amidst criticism over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile. The widespread eye injuries were one of the topics addressed during the impeachment of Minister of the Interior and Public Security Andrés Chadwick in November 2019. On November 20 Mañalich declared to the Chamber of Deputies that there was twelve persons with the loss of one eye and about thirty with serious injuries. 2010 Copiapó Mining Accident
The 2010 Copiapó mining accident, also known as the "Chilean mining accident", began on 5 August 2010, with a cave-in at the San José copper–gold mine, located in the Atacama Desert, north of the regional capital of Copiapó, in northern Chile. 33 men were trapped underground and from the mine's entrance and were rescued after 69 days. Chile is the world's top producer of copper, but many workers die in mining incidents, as high as 43 in 2008. The mine was owned by the San Esteban Mining Company, known for making unsafe mines. The company ignored warnings by the Chilean Safety Administration, leading to the collapse and the eventual rescue. The collapse happened on 14:00 CLT on 5 August 2010, where 34 people were present.
