Jagüey Grande, simply known as Jagüey (), is a town and municipality in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. It is located east of the Zapata Peninsula, north of the Bahia de Cochinos, along the A1 motorway in the center of the province. History The town was founded in 1840 and was named after the tree ''Ficus citrifolia'', locally named "Jagüey". Geography The municipality was historically divided into the barrios of Pueblo (town's centre), Gallardo, López, Murga Sinú, and Rovira. Nowadays it counts the town itself and the popular councils (''consejos populares'', i.e. villages) of Agramonte, Australia, San José de Marcos, and Torriente. Agramonte, the most populated village, was an autonomous municipality until the 1976 reform. Demographics In 2022, the municipality of Jagüey Grande had a population of 59,600. Forest Siege
The Forest Siege or J-4 Operation, also called ''Bayonetas Contra Estudiantes'', was a Cuban Military Siege or Cuban Military Operation on three Pakistani medical schools in Cuba in early 2010. The purpose was to expel some of infamous (word used by Cuban official) students involved in protests against administration and school authorities. The siege was a type of raid during which a large number of Cuban special force armed men who surrounded the school of J-4. Two additional schools, namely AG-7 and T-9, were also surrounded by Cuban forces. At least 15 students named by authorities were captured, arrested and immediately deported to their home country. The siege is called the Forest Siege because these schools were located in an area of a planted forest of oranges and a few other varieties of citrus fruit, far from the main city of Matanzas located on the northern shore of the island of Cuba. Pedro Betancourt, sometimes shortened as Betancourt, is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. Unión de Reyes is a municipality and town in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. It is located in the western part of the province, south of Matanzas, Cuba, Matanzas, the provincial capital. History Unión de Reyes was founded in 1844, and it was established as a municipality on July 1, 1879. Its name derives from ''Unión en el Punto de Reyes'', so named for its location at a railway junction. Ciénaga De Zapata
Ciénaga de Zapata is one of 14 Municipalities of Cuba, municipalities of the Matanzas Province, Cuba, and the municipal seat is located at Playa Larga, at the northern end of the Bay of Pigs, Bahia de Cochinos ("Bay of Pigs"). A large part of the municipality is protected as the Zapata Swamp, after which the municipality is named. With an area of , it is the largest municipality of Cuba. Among the villages included in the municipal territory, one of the most famous is Playa Girón, site of the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961. Colón, Cuba
Colón is a municipality and city in the Matanzas Province of Cuba. The municipality has an area of and a population of about 68,021. The city proper, with a population of about 44,000, is the third-largest of its province. History The town was founded in 1836 under the name ''Nueva Bermeja''. The railroad, arrived nearby the town still in 1843, reached it in 1851. In 1852, Fernando Diago, the owner of the sugar mill Ponina, inaugurated the first public school in town. In 1859, it achieved the status of ('town') with the name Colón, after Christopher Columbus ( in Spanish). The founder's name is don Martín José Zozaya, who founded the town in the former hacienda named ''La Bermeja''. The deed to establish the town was signed in the city of Matanzas in 1836.
