Jacques Kuba Séguin
Jacques Kuba Séguin is a Polish Canadian musician and radio host. Early life Séguin was born in Poland to a Québécois father and a Polish mother. Career Séguin is a jazz trumpet player, composer, orchestrator, and radio host. He is most noted for his 2019 album ''Migrations'', which won the Juno Award for Solo Jazz Album of the Year at the Juno Awards 2020 and the Felix Award for Jazz Album of the Year at the 42nd Felix Awards. He was a leader of several ensembles, such as MiGRATIONS, Litania Projekt, and Odd Lot. He was the winner of the 2012-13 Radio-Canada Revelations prize. In 2015, he was nominated for two ADISQ awards and Prix Opus awards as Best Arranger and Jazz Album of the Year for L’élévation du point de chute. In 2016, he was nominated for two ADISQ awards Litania Projekt with the Quatuor Bozzini best arranger and jazz album of the year. Polish Canadians () are citizens of Canada with Polish ancestry, and Poles who immigrated to Canada from abroad. At the 2016 Census, there were 1,106,585 Canadians who claimed full or partial Polish heritage. History The first Polish immigrant on record, was Dominik Barcz, came to Canada in 1752. ADISQ
ADISQ (; ) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the independent record labels, independent music industry in Quebec. It was created in 1978. Since 1979, it has also organized an annual awards ceremony for musicians and singers. The award bears the name ''Félix Award, Félix'' after famed singer-songwriter Félix Leclerc. ''Delirium'' was a touring multimedia stage show by Cirque du Soleil featuring live music, video projections, and performances by acrobats and other circus performers. The production featured remixes of existing Cirque du Soleil music. The show premiered on January 26, 2006 and had its final performance in London, England on April 20, 2008. Vic Vogel
Victor Stefan Vogel (August 3, 1935 – September 16, 2019) was a Canadian jazz pianist, composer, arranger, trombonist, and conductor. Biography Vogel was born in 1935 to Hungarian parents living in Montreal. He began playing the piano at the age of five after watching his older brother play. He also taught himself to play trombone (from age 19), tuba, and vibraphone, and to arrange music. At 14, he began working occasionally in Montreal nightclubs, and did a CBC radio broadcast, while repairing cars to earn money. In the mid-1950s he studied piano and music theory with Michel Harvey in Montreal, and took lesson from Lennie Tristano in New York City. Vogel became a full-time professional musician in the late 1950s, and through the 1960s worked as both a sideman and bandleader in nightclubs, and eventually in radio and TV studios. Elizabeth Shepherd (musician)
Elizabeth Shepherd is a Canadian pianist, singer, songwriter and producer. Early life Born in 1977, Shepherd is the daughter of two ministers of The Salvation Army. From an early age, she grew up on choral music, brass bands and classical music. She studied classical piano at conservatories in Canada and France, then came to jazz through old school hiphop, to eventually complete a degree in jazz piano from McGill University in Montreal after considering a career in music therapy. Career In 2004, Shepherd moved to Toronto and worked as a waitress at a piano bar. She began performing, and became a regular entertainer at the restaurant. She formed The Elizabeth Shepherd Trio with Scott Kemp on bass and Colin Kingsmore on drums. In 2006, she recorded her debut album, ''Start to Move'', which was voted among the top three jazz albums of 2006 by the listeners of ''The Gilles Peterson Show'' on BBC Radio 1.
