Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,485. The county seat is Maquoketa. History The county was formed on December 21, 1837, and named after US President Andrew Jackson. In the early morning of July 22, 2022, an assailant killed three members of a family at the campground of Maquoketa Caves State Park, located in the county. The assailant, identified as 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin of Nebraska, later committed suicide. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (2.1%) is water. Its eastern border is formed by the Mississippi River. Bellevue State Park (Iowa)
Bellevue State Park is a public recreation area along the banks of the Mississippi River just south of Bellevue, Iowa, United States. The state park lies in two separate tracts. The Nelson Unit is at the immediate south edge of Bellevue on U.S. Route 52, atop a limestone bluff. The Dyas Unit is farther south on U.S. 52. The park offers high bluffs with scenic views of the Mississippi River amidst of timbered walking trails, a butterfly sanctuary and an enclosed nature center. Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge
Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge is a United States National Wildlife Refuge in northeastern Iowa, southwestern Wisconsin and northwestern Illinois. It is a collection of non-contiguous parcels in the vicinity of the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. The refuge was established in 1989 to help the recovery of two federally listed species: the endangered Iowa Pleistocene Snail and threatened plant Northern Wild Monkshood. Although the refuge was established to protect the snail and flower, an entire rare community of plants and animals is preserved on these sites. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages the refuge as part of the National Wildlife Refuge system. Currently, the refuge consists of nine sites totaling in four counties of Iowa only.
