J. T. Marryat Hornsby
John Thomas Marryat Hornsby (13 March 1857 – 23 February 1921), generally known as J. T. Marryat Hornsby, was a New Zealand politician of the Liberal Party from the Wairarapa. He was a newspaper editor and proprietor. Biography Early life Hornsby was born at Hobart, Tasmania in 1857. His family moved to Nelson in 1874 and when the other family members returned to Hobart, he remained in New Zealand. Political career He was a Member of Parliament for the electorate in the 14th (1899–1902), 16th (1905–1908), and 19th (1914–1919) Parliaments. He defeated Walter Clarke Buchanan (the Conservative sitting member from 1887) in 1899, but lost to him in 1902 and 1908. Buchanan was later the Reform Party candidate. Wairarapa (New Zealand Electorate)
Wairarapa electorate boundaries used since the Wairarapa is a New Zealand parliamentary electorate. It was first created in 1858 (with the first election in 1859) and existed until 1881. It was recreated in 1887 and has since existed continuously. In the early years, the electorate was for a time represented by two members. Wairarapa has been held by Kieran McAnulty since the . Population centres The initial 24 New Zealand electorates were defined by Governor George Grey in March 1853, based on the New Zealand Constitution Act 1852 that had been passed by the British government. 1902 New Zealand General Election
The 1902 New Zealand general election was held on Tuesday, 25 November, in the general electorates, and on Monday, 22 December in the Māori electorates to elect a total of 80 MPs to the 15th session of the New Zealand Parliament. A total number of 415,789 (76.7%) voters turned out to vote. The Rev Frank Isitt was nominated as the Prohibitionist candidate for ten separate electorates, and came second in eight. Another candidate, David Whyte, was nominated for two. Both men stood to ensure that a local liquor licensing poll was held in each electorate for which they were nominated. 1902 electoral redistribution The Representation Act 1900 had increased the membership of the House of Representatives from general electorates 70 to 76, and this was implemented through the 1902 electoral redistribution.
