Islam Day (Hawaii)
Islam Day was a day of recognition for Islam and Muslims in Hawaii on September 24, 2009 designated by a symbolic resolution of the State Legislature. Establishment Hawaii House Concurrent Resolution 100 to establish the day was proposed by Lyla Berg and passed unanimously on May 6, 2009. The Hawaii Senate passed the resolution 22 to 3 to recognize "the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions of the Islamic world". It was set for November 21 the founding of Islam, but moved to September 24 on the day Mohammad arrived in Medina in 644, allegedly because it conflicted with Aloha (Makahiki) Festivals. It was a state-designated day of recognition and not a holiday and no government funds were designated to it, to preserve the "separation of church and state". Muslims and supporters have seen it as an opportunity to repair the image of Islam, damaged by Islamic extremism. The public in Hawaii had a largely indifferent reaction to the news of the new day. Lyla Berg
Lyla Berg (born March 15, 1951) is a Hawaiian Hawaii Democratic Party, Democratic politician. She was first elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives in 2004 representing the Kāhala, Hawaii, Kāhala area of Honolulu on Oahu. Berg was a Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii in the Hawaii lieutenant governor election, 2010, 2010 election. She was attacked for having sponsored a resolution to designate an Islam Day (Hawaii), Islam Day in 2009; critics claimed that according to the Julian Calendar, the holiday celebrated the September 11 attacks. She lost in the primary to Brian Schatz. Islam Awareness Week
The Islamic Society of Britain (ISB) was set up in 1990 for British Muslims to promote Islamic values. Its youth wing is The Young Muslims UK (YMUK). Background The ISB's first president was Zahid Parvez. On 16 November 2013 Sughra Ahmed was elected president of ISB, the first female to hold that post. According to ''Islamic Organizations in Europe and the USA'', the society caters to non-Arab Sunni Muslims, born and brought up in Britain. Anti- Islamist author, Ed Husain, who participated in an ISB "Usrah" religious study group in the 1990s, describes the society as "proudly British", predominately middle class and professional. Julie Siddiqi was the executive director of the Islamic Society of Britain from 2010 to 2014. Muslim Association Of Hawaii
The Muslim Association of Hawaii is a nonprofit and charitable organization or a mosque in Manoa. Ismail Elshikh is the imam of the association, and is from Cairo, Egypt. Hakim Ouansafi, from Morocco, is the Arab head of the mosque committee, and is the president of the Muslim Association of Hawaii. Rashid Abdullah is the Information officer. History The Muslim Students' Association of Hawaii was originally composed of students from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. They were members of the East West Center and came from various parts of the world: India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and from the Middle East. They prayed at a cottage in the East West center prior to the purchase of the Manoa building, which became the Muslim Association of Hawaii in 1990.
