Herbie Hancock
Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (born April 12, 1940) is an American jazz pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, and composer. Hancock started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd's group. He shortly thereafter joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. In the 1970s, Hancock experimented with jazz fusion, funk, and electro styles, utilizing a wide array of synthesizers and electronics. It was during this period that he released perhaps his best-known and most influential album, '' Head Hunters''. Hancock's best-known compositions include "Cantaloupe Island", " Watermelon Man", " Maiden Voyage", and " Chameleon", all of which are jazz standards. Jonny King
Jonny King (Jonathan Z. King, born 2 February 1965, New York City, New York) is an American jazz pianist, attorney, fisherman and writer. Raised in New York City, King graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School and works as an intellectual property attorney. As well as recording under his own name, he has performed with Eddie Harris, Vincent Herring, Christian McBride, OTB, Joshua Redman, Mark Turner, and Steve Wilson. He has performed around the world and is a regular in New York City's jazz clubs. He is the author of ''What Jazz Is'' (Walker Publishing), a primer on jazz listening published in conjunction with a CD prepared by Blue Note Records. King is also a fly tyer and fisherman. Barney Wilen
Bernard "Barney" Jean Wilen (4 March 1937 – 25 May 1996) was a French tenor and soprano saxophonist and jazz composer. Life Wilen was born in Nice, France; his father was an American dentist turned inventor, and his mother was French. He began performing in clubs in Nice after being encouraged by Blaise Cendrars who was a friend of his mother. His career was boosted in 1957, when he worked with Miles Davis on the soundtrack for the Louis Malle film '' Ascenseur pour l'Échafaud'' (''Elevator to the Gallows''). In 1959, Wilen wrote his soundtrack ''Un Témoin Dans la Ville'' and studio album '' Jazz sur scène'' with Kenny Clarke. He wrote a soundtrack for Roger Vadim's film '' Les Liaisons Dangereuses'' two years later, working with Thelonious Monk. Wilen returned to composing for French films in the 1980s and 1990s. Vincent Dwayne Herring (born November 19, 1964) is an American jazz saxophonist, flautist, composer, and educator. Known for his fiery and soulful playing in the bands of Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, and Nat Adderley in the earlier stages of his career, he now frequently performs around the world with his own groups and is heavily involved in jazz education. Mulgrew Miller
Mulgrew Miller (August 13, 1955 – May 29, 2013) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and educator. As a child he played in churches and was influenced on piano by Ramsey Lewis and then Oscar Peterson. Aspects of their styles remained in his playing, but he added the greater harmonic freedom of McCoy Tyner and others in developing as a hard bop player and then in creating his own style, which influenced others from the 1980s on. After leaving university he was pianist with the Duke Ellington Orchestra for three years, then accompanied vocalist Betty Carter. Three-year stints with trumpeter Woody Shaw and with drummer Art Blakey's high-profile Jazz Messengers followed, by the end of which Miller had formed his own bands and begun recording under his own name.
