International Selkirk Loop
The International Selkirk Loop is a scenic highway in the U.S. states of Idaho and Washington, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia. The loop encircles the Selkirk Mountain Range, and offers several side trips aside from the main route. Included on the loop is the Kootenay Lake Ferry, the longest free ferry in the world. The portion of the loop in the United States has been designated an All-American Road by the United States Department of Transportation. Colville National Forest
The Colville National Forest is a U.S. National Forest located in northeastern Washington state. It is bordered on the west by the Okanogan–Wenatchee National Forest and the Kaniksu National Forest to the east. The forest also borders Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge and the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. As of October 2020, the Colville National Forest now includes the Tonasket Ranger District, which was previously part of the Okanogan–Wenatchee National Forest. Geography The forest encompasses a mountainous area consisting of the Kettle River and Selkirk mountain ranges, and the upper reaches of the Columbia River. Kootenay Lake
Kootenay Lake is a lake located in British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the Kootenay River. The lake has been raised by the Corra Linn Dam and has a dike system at the southern end, which, along with industry in the 1950s–70s, has changed the ecosystem in and around the water. The Kootenay Lake ferry is a year-round toll-free ferry that crosses between Kootenay Bay and Balfour. The lake is a popular summer tourist destination. State Highway 57 (SH-57) is a state highway located entirely within Bonner County in the Idaho Panhandle region of the U.S. state of Idaho. SH-57 runs from U.S. Route 2 (US 2) in Priest River north to the end of state maintenance in Nordman. The highway is maintained by the Idaho Transportation Department. State Highway 200 (SH-200) is an east–west state highway in northern Idaho, United States. It travels along the north side of Lake Pend Oreille and the Clark Fork River between the Sandpoint area and the Montana border, where it continues as Montana Highway 200. Bonners Ferry, Idaho
Bonners Ferry (Kutenai language: ʔaq̓anqmi) is the largest city and the county seat of Boundary County, Idaho, United States. The population was 2,543 at the 2010 census. History When gold was discovered in the East Kootenays of British Columbia in 1863, thousands of prospectors from all over the West surged northward over a route that became known as the Wildhorse Trail. Edwin Bonner, a merchant from Walla Walla, Washington, established a ferry in 1864 where the trail crossed the broad Kootenai River. In 1875, Richard Fry, and his Sinixt wife, Justine Su-steel Fry, leased the business, but the location retained the name of the original founder and later became the town of Bonners Ferry. British Columbia Highway 21
Highway 21 is a cross-border spur in the Regional District of Central Kootenay in British Columbia. First opened in 1964, the highway travels 14 km (9 mi) northwest along the Kootenay River from its connection with Idaho State Highway 1 at the Rykerts Canada-U.S. border crossing to a point on the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) just 1 km (about ½ mi) west of Creston. Approximately 4 km (2 mi) from its northbound terminus, Highway 21 comes to an intersection with Erickson Street as it enters Creston. At this point, motorists intending to travel eastbound on the Crowsnest Highway toward Cranbrook and the Alberta border can bypass Creston's main business district and connect to the Crowsnest at Erickson.
