Ingvar (name)
The name Ingvar is an Old Norse first name for men common in Scandinavia meaning "protected by Yngvi". The feminine version of the name is Inga. The first element of the name is derived from Proto-Norse *''Ing(w)ia'' (''Ingi''-), Norse ''Yngvi'', who is better known by the title Freyr "Lord". The second element is probably either *''harjaz'' (warrior) or *''warjaz'' (defender). The name consequently either meant ''Freyr's warrior'' or ''Freyr's defender''. Igor (Russian ''Igor'', Ukrainian ''Ihor'', Belarusian ''Ihar'') is a given name derived from the Scandinavian name Ingvar that was brought to ancient Kievan Rus' by the Vikings. Igor, son of Rurik, conquered Kiev. Old English sources suggest that the birth-name of Ivar the Boneless might have been Ingvar; he is referred to as Hyngvar, Hingvar and Inguar in the English annals. Yngvi
Old Norse Yngvi , Old High German Ing/Ingwi and Old English Ingƿine are names that relate to a theonym which appears to have been the older name for the god Freyr. Proto-Germanic *Ingwaz was the legendary ancestor of the Ingaevones, or more accurately ''Ingvaeones'', and is also the reconstructed name of the Elder Futhark rune ᛜ and Anglo-Saxon rune ᛝ, representing '' ŋ''. A torc, the so-called "Ring of Pietroassa", part of a late third to fourth century Gothic hoard discovered in Romania, is inscribed in much-damaged runes, one reading of which is ''gutanī (ng)i hailag'' "to Ingwi of the Goths holy". Etymology Old Norse ''Yngvi'' as well as Old High German ''Inguin'' and Old English ''Ingƿine'' are all derived from the Proto-Germanic *Ingwaz. Sound changes in late-Proto-Germanic transformed *Ingwaz into *Ingwi(z) in the nominative case and *''Ingwin'' in the accusative case. His epithet *Fraujaz appears in Old Norse compounds ''Ingvifreyr'' and ''Ingunarfreyr''. In B ...

Ingvar
Yngvar Harra (or Ingvar; Proto-Norse ''*Ingu-Hariz''; non, Yngvarr ; d. early 7th century) was the son of Östen and reclaimed the Swedish throne for the House of Yngling after the Swedes had rebelled against Sölvi. He is reported to have fallen in battle in Estonia and buried there. Although the account of Ingvar is semi-legendary, the discovery of the two Salme ships has confirmed that a similar historic event took place in the 8th century. ''Ynglinga saga'' Snorri Sturluson relates in his ''Ynglinga saga'' that King Ingvar, Östen's son, was a great warrior who often spent time patrolling the shores of his kingdom fighting Danes and Estonian vikings (''Víkingr frá Esthland''). King Ingvar finally came to a peace agreement with the Danes and could take care of the Estonian vikings. He consequently started pillaging in Estonia in retribution, and one summer he arrived at a place called Stein (see also Sveigder). The Estonians (''sýslu kind'') assembled a great army in ...
