Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association National Championships
The Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) holds National Championships in seven different categories: * Coed Dinghy * Women’s Dinghy *Team Racing * Women's Team Racing * Men’s Singlehanded * Women’s Singlehanded *Match Racing (previously Sloop) The college team that compiles the best overall record in the six categories is awarded the Leonard M. Fowle Trophy. Teams must qualify for the National Championships through conference championships. All regattas are scored low-point with no throw-out races. Racing is done on short courses. Boats are usually rotated each race so that each team sails each boat in the fleet once. The ICSA National Championships rotate amongst ICSA's seven different conferences each year. Sloop
A sloop is a sailboat with a single mast typically having only one headsail in front of the mast and one mainsail aft of (behind) the mast. Such an arrangement is called a fore-and-aft rig, and can be rigged as a Bermuda rig with triangular sails fore and aft, or as a gaff-rig with triangular foresail(s) and a gaff rigged mainsail. Sailboats can be classified according to type of rig, and so a sailboat may be a sloop, catboat, cutter, ketch, yawl, or schooner. A sloop usually has only one headsail, although an exception is the Friendship sloop, which is usually gaff-rigged with a bowsprit and multiple headsails. If the vessel has two or more headsails, the term cutter may be used, especially if the mast is stepped further towards the back of the boat. Match Racing
A match race is a race between two competitors, going head-to-head. In sailboat racing it is differentiated from a fleet race, which almost always involves three or more competitors competing against each other, and team racing where teams consisting of 2, 3 or 4 boats compete together in a team race, with their results being combined. In horse racing, it has historically been a format used for one-off events, but in 2009 IMRA, the International Match Race Association was created to enable anyone to enter a one-on-one horse race in all-terrain half-mile loops. Gary Jobson is a sailor, television commentator and author based in Annapolis, Maryland. He is a Vice President of the International Sailing Federation. Gary has authored 19 sailing books and is Editor at Large of ''Sailing World'' and ''Cruising World'' magazines. He is President of the National Sailing Hall of Fame. Lifetime Raised in Toms River, New Jersey, Jobson graduated from Toms River High School (now Toms River High School South) in 1969 and was inducted into the school district's hall of fame in 1990. Kenneth Read (born June 24, 1961) is an American yachtsman who is considered one of the world's most accomplished and celebrated sailors. Charles McKee
Charles McKee (born March 14, 1962) is an American sailor and Olympic medalist. He won the ICSA Match Racing National Championship in 1985 with the University of Washington. He competed in the 470 class at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and received a bronze medal. Terry Hutchinson
Terry Hutchinson (born May 20, 1968) is an American sailor eleven-time world champion in the Corel 45, J/24, TP 52, Farr 40 and IMS classes, and a winning tactician of the Louis Vuitton Cup. In 2008 and 2014, he was named Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. He has also been part of five America's Cup campaigns. Background He grew up in Annapolis, Maryland and went to St. Mary's High School. Briana Provancha
Briana Provancha (born April 25, 1989) is an American sailor who competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Life Provancha was born in San Diego in 1989. At the age of eight she had begun sailing. She attended Point Loma High School and by the age of 16 she had been in several international competitions. She won the ICSA Coed Dinghy National Championship in 2010 with the Boston College sailing team, where she also sailed with Annie Haeger and they both graduated in 2012. Provancha's degree was in marketing. She and Haeger won their place at the United States at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Palma de Mallorca which continued their dominance over the previous three years.
