Ivo Brešan
Ivan "Ivo" Brešan (27 May 1936 – 3 January 2017) was a Croatian and Yugoslav playwright, novelist and screenwriter, known for political satire. His works include screenplays written with his son Vinko Brešan, Vinko. Personal life Born in Vodice, Šibenik-Knin County, Vodice in 1936, Brešan attended Antun Vrančić High School in Šibenik. He was married to Croatian writer Jelena Godlar, a Jew native to Slavonia. In February 1964, she gave to birth their son Vinko Brešan, Vinko, today a film director. Ivo's wife Jelena died on 20 September 2016. He died after a long and severe illness on 3 January 2017 in Zagreb when he was 80 years of age. ''Libertas'' is a 2006 Croatian-Italian co-production film directed by Veljko Bulajić. It is a biographical film about the 16th-century playwright Marin Držić and his conflict with authorities of the Republic of Ragusa. The film marked the return of the veteran director Veljko Bulajić after a 17-year break. Following a long and troubled production, it was released to high expectations, but did not meet a favorable reception from either the critics or the box office. ''Marshal Tito's Spirit'' () is a 1999 Croatian film directed by Vinko Brešan. It was Croatia's submission to the 73rd Academy Awards for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but was not accepted as a nominee. Synopsis The film centers on the Croatian island of Vis in 1998. During the funeral of a local Yugoslav Partisan veteran, his elderly comrades start seeing the ghost of Marshal Josip Broz Tito. After rumours about the apparition spread around, a Split-based policeman who goes by the name Stipan is ordered to investigate the suspicious movements of members in his hometown, a remote Adriatic island whose only connection with the mainland is a ferry that comes around once a week.
