István Bató
István Bató (1812–1890) was a prominent citizen of the northern Hungary, Hungarian city of Miskolc in the 19th century. Several local legends are linked to him, and although the citizens of Miskolc are not superstitious, some traditions connected with the curses Bató laid on those who defy his will, remain. Background Bató was a wealthy wheat merchant. He married a rich girl called Eszter Imre and had two daughters, Eszter (b. 1837) and Borbála (b. 1842). Borbala died in childhood, and Eszter was forced to marry a rich lawyer several years her senior. She died not long after that, on May 13, 1867. Since Eszter wanted to give the nearby Protestant church (the Kossuth Street Church) a bell that would be the largest bell in the city, her family collected all the gold and silver they had, and had a large bell made for the church. The forint (, sign Ft; code HUF) is the currency of Hungary. It was formerly divided into 100 fillér, but fillér coins are no longer in circulation. The introduction of the forint on 1 August 1946 was a crucial step in the post-World War II stabilisation of the Hungarian economy, and the currency remained relatively stable until the 1980s. Transition to a market economy in the early 1990s adversely affected the value of the forint; inflation peaked at 35% in 1991. Wooden Church (Miskolc)
The Wooden Church ''(Deszkatemplom, lit. "wooden plank church")'' is a church in Miskolc, Hungary. It is built of carved wood. The present building was built in 1999 in place of the previous one that was destroyed by arson in 1997. The first church was consecrated on September 13, 1637, but both this date and the existence of the church are preserved only in tradition and there is no documentary evidence. The first document mentioning a church at this site dates back to 1698. This church was built of wood, but nothing else is known about it. The first church known by the name of 'Wooden Church' was built in 1724 and it stood until 1937. István Bató, a 19th-century citizen of Miskolc left a large sum to the church.
