Iso-Heikkilä
Iso-Heikkilä ( Finnish; ''Storheikkilä'' in Swedish) is a district of the city of Turku, in Finland. It is located to the west of the city centre, bordering on the city centre's VIII District (Port Arthur). The current () population of Iso-Heikkilä is 1,905, and it is decreasing at an annual rate of 0.79%. Only 4.57% of the district's population is under 15 years old, while 35.17% are over 65. Iso-Heikkilä thus has one of the oldest populations in Turku. The district's linguistic makeup is 94.86% Finnish, 3.94% Swedish, and 1.21% other languages. Most of Iso-Heikkilä is industrial area and offices, but there is also a residential area with a children's daycare centre and a home for the elderly. The Iso-Heikkilä Observatory is located in the Iso-Heikkilä district. Iso-Heikkilä Observatory
Iso-Heikkilä Observatory (, ) is an amateur astronomical observatory used by a local amateur astronomical association, Turun Ursa ry in the Iso-Heikkilä district of Turku, Finland. Referred to as Turku Observatory () by the Minor Planet Center, it was previously operated by the University of Turku from 1937 to 1972, and is the observatory where several Finnish discoverers of minor planets made their observations. History The observatory was originally owned by the department of astronomy of the University of Turku. It was built in 1935 and 1936, and technically designed by physics and astronomy professor Yrjö Väisälä. Väisälä's research team discovered a total of 807 minor planets and 7 comets at the observatory. Väisälä also contributed significantly to research in the areas of optics and surveying. VIII District, Turku
The VIII District, also known as Port Arthur (or Portsa in colloquial Finnish), is one of the central districts of Turku, Finland. It is located on the west side of the river Aura, between ''Puistokatu'' and the IX District (''Länsiranta''). The district consists mostly of wooden houses, separated by narrow streets paved with cobblestones. It is widely considered one of the most beautiful residential districts in the whole of Finland, and has received an award to that effect in 2001. Port Arthur is one of the most expensive districts in Turku to live in. The district was originally built in the 1900s as a residential area for workers.
