Islip Saddle, California
Islip Saddle ( ) is a saddle and mountain pass in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It lies just west of Mount Islip in the San Gabriel Mountains at the intersection of State Route 2 and the northern terminus of State Route 39. It is the second highest mountain pass on the highway after nearby Dawson Saddle. Name origin Islip Saddle is named after Canadian homesteader George Islip, who lived in neighboring San Gabriel Canyon in the 1900s. Overview Islip Saddle lies at the head of San Gabriel Canyon between Mount Williamson to the northwest and Mount Islip to the southeast. The summit features a parking lot and public restrooms for visitors intending to hike in the area. A gate just east of the parking lot restricts access to Angeles Crest Highway between the saddle and Vincent Gap during the winter due to heavy snowfall. San Gabriel Mountains
The San Gabriel Mountains ( es, Sierra de San Gabriel) are a mountain range located in northern Los Angeles County and western San Bernardino County, California, United States. The mountain range is part of the Transverse Ranges and lies between the Los Angeles Basin and the Mojave Desert, with Interstate 5 to the west and Interstate 15 to the east. California State Route 39
State Route 39 (SR 39) is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that travels through Orange and Los Angeles counties. Its southern terminus is at Pacific Coast Highway ( SR 1), in Huntington Beach. SR 39's northern terminus is at Islip Saddle on Angeles Crest Highway ( SR 2) in the Angeles National Forest, but its northernmost segment (including the connection with SR 2) has been closed to the public since 1978 due to a massive mud and rockslide. It would cost a total of $100 million USD to repair the road. Officially, the highway is broken into pieces. Caltrans has not adopted or signed the segment between La Habra and West Covina. Mount Williamson, at an elevation of , is the second-highest mountain in both the Sierra Nevada range and the state of California, and the sixth-highest peak in the contiguous United States. Geography Williamson stands in the John Muir Wilderness of the Inyo National Forest.
