Island Games
The Island Games (currently known as the NatWest International Island Games for sponsorship reasons) are biennial international multi-sports events organised by the International Island Games Association (IIGA). Competitor teams each represent different island communities (with one team from the peninsula of Gibraltar) which are IIGA members. Currently, all competitor teams represent non-sovereign territories of European nations—some within European waters and some further overseas. The most recent edition was the 2023, which took place in Guernsey with around 2,200 competitors from 24 islands or island groups participating in 14 sports. The next games will be hosted by Orkney in 2025. 2023 Island Games
The XIX Island Games (also known as the ''2023 NatWest Island Games'' for sponsorship reasons) were to have been held in Guernsey in 2021; however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Games were postponed. This occasion will be the third time that the island would host the games, the first being in 1987 Island Games, 1987, and the second in 2003 Island Games, 2003. Rescheduled, the week-long event welcomed around 2,500 competitors and officials from 24 islands to take part in 14 sports. Host The Faroe Islands were initially chosen to host the games but pulled out of doing so in early 2015. In July 2016 the Island Games AGM unanimously decided to award the games to Guernsey. The Guernsey organising committee chair was Dame Mary Perkins, supported by Peter Vidamour as sports director and Ian Damarell as Finance Director. Sark
Sark (Sercquiais: or , ) is an island in the southwestern English Channel, off the coast of Normandy, and part of the archipelago of the Channel Islands. It is a self-governing British Crown Dependencies, Crown Dependency, with its own set of laws based on Norman law, and its own parliament. It was a royal fief, fiefdom until 2008, when the Constitution of Sark went into effect. Sark has a population of about 500. Including the nearby island of Brecqhou, it has an area of . Little Sark is a peninsula joined by a natural but high and very narrow isthmus to the rest of Sark Island. The 1999 Island Games were the eighth Island Games, and were held in Gotland, Sweden, from June 26 to July 2, 1999. Gotland hosted Island Games again in 2017 Island Games, June 2017. 1995 Island Games
The 1995 Island Games were the sixth edition of Island Games, and were held in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, from 15 to 22 July. The Government of Gibraltar furnished Lathbury Barracks with 1,000 bunkbeds to accommodate the competing athletes. The Royal Navy had previously used the barracks as a training camp.
