Isaac Stephenson
Isaac Stephenson (June 18, 1829March 15, 1918) was an American businessman, Republican politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He represented Wisconsin as a United States senator from 1907 to 1915, and served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1883–1889). He was an important financial backer of Wisconsin progressive leader Robert M. La Follette in his initial bids for governor. Earlier in his career, he served two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the area now comprising Marinette, Oconto, and Shawano counties. He was a major employer and philanthropist in early Marinette County, and several places in the county bare his name, including the town of Stephenson, Wisconsin, and the Stephenson Public Library in the city of Marinette. Forest Home Cemetery
Forest Home Cemetery is a historic rural cemetery and arboretum located in the Lincoln Village, City of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lincoln Village neighborhood of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is the final resting place of many of the city's famed beer barons, politicians and social elite. Both the cemetery and its Landmark Chapel are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and were declared a Milwaukee Landmark in 1973. The cemetery is run by a non-profit organization held in public trust. Profits from each sale are reinvested to insure continual care of the buildings and land. Peshtigo Fire
The Peshtigo fire was a large forest fire on October 8, 1871, in northeastern Wisconsin, United States, including much of the southern half of the Door Peninsula and adjacent parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The largest community in the affected area was Peshtigo, Wisconsin, which had a population of approximately 1,700 residents. The fire burned about and is the deadliest wildfire in recorded history, with the number of deaths estimated between 1,500 and 2,500. The exact number of deaths is debated. Data from mass graves, both those already exhumed and those still being discovered, show that the death toll of the blaze was most likely greater than the 1889 Johnstown flood death toll of 2,200 people or more. Samuel Merritt Stephenson
Samuel Merritt Stephenson (December 23, 1831 – July 31, 1907) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Personal life Stephenson was born in Hartland, New Brunswick, and moved with his parents to Maine, and later, in 1846, to Delta County, Michigan. He engaged in lumbering and moved to Menominee, Michigan, in 1858. He was interested in real estate, lumbering, general merchandising, and agricultural pursuits. He built the Menominee Hotel in 1881 to accommodate visiting lumber buyers; the structure burned down in 1977. After leaving Congress, Stephenson resumed the lumber business. He died in Menominee and is interred there at Riverside Cemetery. In 1876, the then-small settlement of Wacedah north of Menominee was renamed Stephenson in his honor.
