Iranologists
Iranian studies ( '), also referred to as Iranology and Iranistics, is an interdisciplinary field dealing with the research and study of the civilization, history, literature, art and culture of Iranian peoples. It is a part of the wider field of Oriental studies. Iranian studies is broader than and distinct from Persian studies, which is the study of the modern Persian language and literature specifically. The discipline of Iranian Studies focuses on broad trends in culture, history, language and other aspects of not only Persians, but also a variety of other contemporary and historical Iranian peoples, such as Kurds, Lurs, Gilakis, Talysh, Tajiks, Pashtuns, Ossetians, Baluchis, Scythians, Sarmatians, Alans, Parthians, Sogdians, Bactrians, Khwarazmians, and Mazandaranis. Sarmatians
The Sarmatians (; ; Latin: ) were a large confederation of Ancient Iranian peoples, ancient Iranian Eurasian nomads, equestrian nomadic peoples who dominated the Pontic–Caspian steppe, Pontic steppe from about the 5th century BCE to the 4th century CE. The earliest known reference to the Sarmatians occurs in the Avesta, where they appear as ''Sairima-'', which in later Iranian sources becomes ''*Sarm'' and Salm (Shahnameh), ''Salm''. Originating in the central parts of the Eurasian Steppe, the Sarmatians formed part of the wider Scythian cultures. They started migrating westward around the fourth and third centuries BCE, coming to dominate the closely related Scythians by 200 BCE. Iranian Peoples
Iranian peoples, or Iranic peoples, are the collective ethnolinguistic groups who are identified chiefly by their native usage of any of the Iranian languages, which are a branch of the Indo-Iranian languages within the Indo-European languages, Indo-European language family. The Proto-Iranian language, Proto-Iranians are believed to have emerged as a separate branch of the Indo-Iranians in Central Asia around the mid-2nd millennium BC. Parthian Empire
The Parthian Empire (), also known as the Arsacid Empire (), was a major Iranian political and cultural power centered in ancient Iran from 247 BC to 224 AD. Its latter name comes from its founder, Arsaces I, who led the Parni tribe in conquering the region of Parthia in Iran's northeast, then a satrapy (province) under Andragoras, who was rebelling against the Seleucid Empire. Abulfazl Bayhaqi
Abūʾl-Fazl Muḥammad ibn Ḥusayn Bayhaqī (; died September 21, 1077), better known as Abu'l-Fazl Bayhaqi (; also spelled Beyhaqi), was a secretary, historian and author. Educated in the major cultural center of Nishapur, and employed at the court of the famous Ghaznavids, Ghaznavid Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, Mahmud, Bayhaqi was a highly cultured man, whose ''Masterpiece, magnum opus''—the ''Tarikh-i Bayhaqi'', is seen as the most reliable source of valid information about the Ghaznavid era, which was written in an exquisite and vivid Persian literature, Persian prose that would become an ideal model for several eras. Tarikh-i Bayhaqi
''Tārīkh-i Bayhaqī'' (; )Transliteration based on the Classical Persian in which the book was written. For modern Iranian Persian the name could be transliterated as some variation of "Târikh-e Beyhaqi" or "Târikh-e Beyhaghi". See Persian phonology for more information. is a history book written by Abul-Fazl Bayhaqi, in Persian, in the 11th century CE. Much of this voluminous work is lost, but it remains one of the most important sources concerning the history of the Ghaznavid Empire. Khwaday-Namag
''Khwadāy-Nāmag'' (New Persian: ; ) is the hypothetical title of a lost Middle Persian history of Iran from the Sasanian era. It presumably encompassed the legendary and mythical history of Iran from the beginning of time until the Sasanian period. It was a remote predecessor of Ferdowsi's ''Shahnameh'' ('Book of Kings'), the 10th-century Iranian national epic, which, it is assumed, drew from a version or versions of the ''Khwaday-Namag''. Scholars have tried to determine the content of the ''Khwaday-Namag'' through a comparison of Zoroastrian works, Arabic sources, and Ferdowsi's ''Shahnameh''.
