Ione ( ) is a city in Amador County, California. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census the population is 5,141, which is a 35.1% decrease from the 2010 United States census, 2010 census. Once known as "Bedbug" and "Freeze Out," Ione was an important supply center on the main road to the California Mother Lode, Mother Lode and Southern Mines during the California gold rush. History Ione is the historical home of the Plains and Sierra Miwok, Sierra Miwok Indians. In 1840, the future town site became part of the Ranchos of California, Mexican land grant Rancho Arroyo Seco (Yorba), Rancho Arroyo Seco in Alta California. The town is located in the fertile Ione Valley; it is believed to have been named by Thomas Brown around 1849 after one of the heroines in Edward Bulwer-Lyttons drama ''The Last Days of Pompeii'', but conflicting legends and sources for the name exist. She served as vice-president of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs, National Association of Colored Women from 1912 to 1914. Ione Genevieve Shadduck was an educator, women's rights activist, and attorney. She is known for advocating for equal pay and her work in physical education at Drake University. She was a veteran of the Korean War. Early life and education Shadduck was born in Mattoon, Wisconsin on October 28, 1923. She grew up on a farm, attending a one-room schoolhouse for her elementary education. Her first job was at a local electric company, where she asked for equal pay and was refused, leading her to quit. During World War II, she became a Rosie the Riveter and tested out steel drums. In May of 1949, Shadduck joined the Women's Army Corps and later served in the Korean War. Under the G.I. Bill, Shadduck earned her BS in Physical Education from the University of Wisconsin. Ione Holt Grogan (March 4, 1891 – February 5, 1961) was an American academic, mathematician, and educator. She worked as a schoolteacher in North Carolina and Georgia for twenty-two years before joining the faculty at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, where she was a professor of mathematics from 1935 to 1958. A dormitory, a residence college, and a scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (previously the Woman's College), are named after her. Grogan was also the president of the Reviewers Club, the oldest literary club for women in North Carolina. Ione Virginia Hill Cowles (, Hill; after marriage, Mrs. Josiah Evans Cowles; March 13, 1858 - July 4, 1940) was an American clubwoman and social leader. Cowles served as eighth international president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) from 1916 to 1918, and was then re-elected from 1918 to 1920.
