Ioannis Banias
Ioannis (Yannis) Banias () (27 September 1939 – 29 March 2012) was a Greece, Greek politician, and former member of the Hellenic Parliament for the Coalition of Radical Left (2007–2009). Banias was born in Melissourgoi, Arta (regional unit), Arta. He was a member of the Communist Party of Greece from the beginning of 1960s until its split in 1968 when he continued his activities in the Communist Party of Greece (Interior). He was elected president of the latter in 1982. He later participated in the formation of the Renewing Communist Ecological Left and was elected as the president of that group. He died in Athens on 28 March 2012, after a long battle with cancer. Melissourgoi () is a former community in the Arta regional unit, Epirus, in northwestern Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is a municipal unit of the Central Tzoumerka municipality. The municipal unit has an area of 35.510 km2, making it the smallest municipal unit in Central Tzoumerka. In 2021, it recorded a population of 264. The Communist Party of Greece (, ΚΚΕ; ''Kommounistikó Kómma Elládas'', KKE) is a Marxist–Leninist political party in Greece. It was founded in 1918 as the Socialist Workers' Party of Greece (SEKE) and adopted its current name in November 1924. It is the oldest political party in modern Greek politics. The party was banned in 1936, but played a significant role in the Greek resistance and the Greek Civil War, and its membership peaked in the mid-1940s. Legalization of the KKE was restored following the fall of the Greek Junta (χούντα) in 1974. The Communist Party of Greece – Interior (), usually abbreviated as KKE Interior (ΚΚΕ Εσωτερικού or ΚΚΕ Εσ.), was a Eurocommunist party existing between 1968 and 1987 in Greece. The party was formed after the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) suffered a major split following the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia and the suppression of the Prague Spring. The Renewing Communist Ecological Left (, ΑΚΟΑ; AKOA) was a Communism, Eurocommunist party in Greece.
