Invictus Records
Invictus Records was an American record label based in Detroit, Michigan. It was created by former top Motown producers Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland, Jr. (known collectively as Holland–Dozier–Holland). It was the sister label to the Buddah Records, Buddah-distributed Hot Wax Records, which was also owned by Holland-Dozier-Holland. History For most of the 1960s until 1967, Holland-Dozier-Holland (H-D-H) were a leading songwriter, songwriting and record producer, production team, providing hits for The Supremes, The Four Tops and other Motown acts. However, they decided to quit the company they had helped to establish and start their own label for better control and greater rewards. Capitol Records
Capitol Records, LLC (known legally as Capitol Records, Inc. until 2007), and simply known as Capitol, is an American record label owned by Universal Music Group through its Capitol Music Group imprint. It was founded as the first West Coast-based record label of note in the United States in 1942 by Johnny Mercer, Buddy DeSylva, and Wallichs Music City, Glenn E. Wallichs. Parliament (band)
Parliament was an American funk band formed in 1968 by George Clinton as a flagship act of his P-Funk collective. Evolving out of an earlier vocal group, Parliament became associated with a more commercial and less rock-oriented sound than its sister act Funkadelic. Their work incorporated Afrofuturism concepts, horn arrangements, synthesizer, and outlandish theatrics. The band scored a number of Top 10 hits, including the million-selling 1976 single " Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)," and Top 40 albums such as '' Mothership Connection'' (1975). Michael Lovesmith
Michael Lovesmith (born Michael Larry Smith, 1953) is an American R&B singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and executive. He has sometimes been credited as Michael L. Smith. Life and career Born in St Louis, Missouri, he wrote songs for Isaac Hayes and The Isley Brothers, and formed a group with his brothers Danny and Louis Smith, the Smith Connection. They moved to Los Angeles, where they recorded for the Music Merchant label set up by Holland, Dozier and Holland as an offshoot of Invictus Records. ''The Thinker'' (), by Auguste Rodin, is a bronze sculpture depicting a Heroic nudity, nude male figure of heroic size, seated on a large rock, leaning forward, right elbow placed upon the left thigh, back of the right hand supporting the chin in a posture evocative of deep thought and contemplation. This universally recognized expression of "deep thought" has made the sculpture one of the most widely known artworks in the world. Ron Dunbar
Ronald Dunbar (April 15, 1939 – April 3, 2018) was an American songwriter, A&R director and record producer who worked closely with Holland–Dozier–Holland, and with George Clinton. His co-writing credits include the hit songs " Give Me Just a Little More Time", " Band of Gold", and " Patches", for which he won a Grammy. His Grammy award was sold for $2,350 to the owners of TV show '' Pawn Stars''. It was later returned to the Dunbar family, after it was discovered that the buying and selling of Grammy trophies is not allowed. Berry Gordy III (born November 28, 1929), also known as Berry Gordy Jr., is an American retired record executive, record producer, songwriter, film producer and television producer. He is best known as the founder of the Motown record label and its subsidiaries, which was the highest-earning African-American business for decades. 8th Day was an American R&B group from Detroit, Michigan. History The Holland–Dozier–Holland (HDH) songwriting team had scored hits in 1970 with the group 100 Proof (Aged in Soul). When the latter's song "Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed" became a hit, radio stations also began playing the tune "She's Not Just Another Woman". HDH wanted to release the song as another single but did not want to hurt the sales of "Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed", so they released "She's Not Just Another Woman" on Invictus Records under the name 8th Day in 1971. The song, written by Clyde Wilson (a member of 100 Proof who performed under the name of Steve Mancha) and Ronald Dunbar and produced by HDH, became a hit, peaking at No. 11 in the U.S. ''Billboard'' chart. "Band of Gold" is a song written and composed by former Motown producers Holland–Dozier–Holland (under the pseudonym of Edythe Wayne) and Ron Dunbar. It was a major hit when first recorded by Freda Payne in 1970 for the Invictus label, owned by H-D-H. The song has been recorded by numerous artists, notably competing 1986 versions by contrasting pop singers Belinda Carlisle and Bonnie Tyler, and a 2007 version by Kimberley Locke. The legendary songwriting team of Holland–Dozier–Holland used the name Edythe Wayne because of a lawsuit in which they were embroiled with Motown.
