Internet Group do Brasil (iG) is a Brazilian Internet service provider that owns and operates web portals and provides a variety of services, including news, shopping and financial information. iG offered free e-mail accounts until 2016. At the time it was bought in March 2012, iG was the fifth-largest portal in Brazil, with 23.5 million unique monthly visitors. History iG was founded on January 9, 2000, by GP Investments and Banco Opportunity. It gained popularity by offering free dial-up access. In May 2004, Brasil Telecom (then a subsidiary of Oi since 2009) acquired iG for approximately $100 million. Dial-up Internet access is a form of Internet access that uses the facilities of the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to establish a connection to an Internet service provider (ISP) by dialing a telephone number on a conventional telephone line which could be connected using an RJ-11 connector. Dial-up connections use modems to decode audio signals into data to send to a router or computer, and to encode signals from the latter two devices to send to another modem at the ISP. Dial-up Internet reached its peak popularity during the dot-com bubble with the likes of ISPs such as Sprint, EarthLink, MSN Dial-up, NetZero, Prodigy, and America Online (more commonly known as AOL). On August 21, 2001, Patricia Abravanel—daughter of Brazilian media mogul and television personality Silvio Santos—was kidnapped in São Paulo; on August 28, Abravanel was released from her captors, and police arrested two suspects: Marcelo Batista Santos and Esdras Dutra Pinto. The two were accomplices of Esdras' brother Fernando Dutra Pinto—who was confronted in a Barueri hotel the next day and killed two officers.
